  • What camera do you own / recommend?

I have been viewing some of these posts with photos and many of them are unbelievably professional looking. I am thinking of taking up photography, but not what camera to buy. Canon? Sony? Nikon? What camera do you own / recommend?

What brand doesn't matter much these days, all the top brands have quality gear for (too) muchos pesos down to the affordable 'point+shoot' for the semi-professional.. what matters much more is what for, where and when you'll use that camera. I you want an 'all-in-one' with a few buttons/settings, small and light enough to keep in a small pocket, or carry around various lenses, tripods and other gear while trying to understand the manual. Also note that how much and/or good equipment you have, if you don't have or develop a keen/creative eye, you'll end up with 'middle-of-the-road' pixx. Lots of 'how-to' books on the internet!

I suggest you have a look around at dpreview, especially the sections
http://www.dpreview.com/articles/343...t&ref=mainmenu and http://www.dpreview.com/forums/1002?...t&ref=mainmenu and a lot more here:

      • Fuji - XT-1
      • 23mm f1.4
      • Leica 50mm f1.4 ASPH via Fuji M to X mount adaptor
      • Kood neutral density kit via P type adaptor (this is very useful for cutting the light and allowing more creative combinations of speed/ aperture)
      • Footprint wrist strap (http://footprintstraps.blogspot.com/...nt-straps.html): the Fuji is very compact and a wrist strip is more convenient and doesn't foul the lens - the camera lives in a padded bag when being carried.
      • Downloaded Fuji Camera Remote to use on my iPad - tested and working, but in practice I do not use. If you have an iPhone and want to take photos without attracting attention (say, sitting in a cafe and wanting to take street scenes without raising the camera) then this would be great.

I own a Canon G10, but I don't really recommend it. I am in the market for a new one. I was thinking of getting a DSLR, but after a lot of thinking I may go with one of the smaller point and shoots...there are many great ones out there. I may also go with a mirrorless camera.

The Canon G10 is a great camera don't get me wrong. I have had it for almost five years and it is time to move on. G10 you can use on manual mode, or as a point and shoot. I've been trying to learn the manual mode for a few years, but at this point I may get back into a good point and shoot with a High Def video mode. Any recommendations?

It might be worth looking at the Samsung NX3000 (see http://www.ephotozine.com/article/sa...0-review-25764) - you get a lot of camera, and extras light Lighroom, for a very good price.

Thank you, that looks like a very nice camera indeed^.
I plan on buying one in Hong Kong. Have you tried the mirrorless cameras?

My Fuji is a mirrorless camera, as my Olympus. All this means is that it uses the imaging chip to send an image to the viewfinder (if the camera has one) rather than having a pentaprism to transmit an image directly from the lens (and, hence, needing a mirror to reflect the light from the lens into the pentaprism).

The Samsung will show the image on-screen - there is no viewfinder. Relatively few cameras have viewfinders these days because they are expensive to engineer and therefore only utilised on high-end models.

I don't know H-K at all (and forgive me if you do know it!), but here is a blog post that may help to choose a decent camera shop: http://www.peterstewartphotography.c...econd-Hand-Cam

You will certainly get a great camera with the Canon, but it isn't a new camera or new technology (it was reviewed by DP Review all the way back in 2009, http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos7d/).

Rather than look for a camera you may find it useful to decide what your priorities are i.e.:
                      • does the physical size of the camera matter?
                      • do you have big hands and will therefore need big buttons?
                      • are you likely to look through the viewfinder or use the back screen?
                      • how will you view the photos - printed or on screen?
                      • what are you going to take photos of; people, landscapes, at night, macro?

If you are going to travel with the camera size will be a real issue; a big camera means a big bag and heavy lenses. If you are mainly going to view the photos on screen, and email them, then absolute quality isn't necessary. And the most important part of the camera is the lens these days - you want to get the best glass you can afford.

Unless you are a pro, or intend to make money from stock images (in which case you would be looking at vastly more expensive full-frame sensor cameras), then a small quality system with great lenses is probably better - the exact reason I moved to Fuji.
