  • Asked for my passport last night - where is Thailand really headed?

In all my years of living in Thailand, I have never been asked for my passport until last night. I had to phone my girl to bring it round to me to show the copper. He was unprofessional, rude and no doubt looking to get a bribe. He says that farangs can be locked up for not carrying it and I could have been banged up for not having it. I think he is lying through his buck teeth, but I did not tell him that.

Where is Thailand headed as tourist destination and as a place for farangs to live, work and retire to.

No need to worry says Bangkok Immigration Commander

BANGKOK:-- [thaivisa.com] After the confusion surrounding the news that all foreigners in Thailand are required to carry their passport with them at all times, Thaivisa.com has today obtained official clarification on this matter.

Earlier this afternoon, Thaivisa.com spoke to Deputy Commander and Police Colonel Voravat Amornvivat, a senior official at Immigration headquarters in Bangkok.

Deputy Commander Voravat wanted to reassure the expat community in Thailand about the current situation.

He told Thaivsia.com that information in an article published by The Nation on 31 July 2014, was incorrect.

Deputy Commander Voravat confirmed that foreign tourists and expats do not need to carry their passports with them at all times.

He said that tourists can of course leave their passports locked in their hotel safe and enjoy their holiday in Thailand without worrying about the need to carry their original passport.

Deputy Commander Voravat also said that for expats living here, a Thai driving license or photocopy of your passport can be used as a form of identification.

However, if Immigration Police suspect an individual to be overstaying in Thailand or being involved in illegal activity, then the individual would be required to produce their original passport promptly.

Deputy Commander Voravat referred to Section 58, which reads as follows:

Any alien who has no lawful document for entering the Kingdom under section 12(1);....under this Act; and has no identification in accordance with the Law on Alien registration, is considered to have entered the Kingdom in violation of the Act.

Entering or staying in Thailand without holding a valid passport and visa/extension is subject a fine and possible prison sentence.

****, that really sucks. Sounds like a communist country now.

I'm a bit worried about visiting there with all the **** going on these days. I may head for the Philippines or Vietnam.

^^ Nice one Mid. The law regarding "producing" a passport if requested by a law enforcement officer has always been the case in Thailand. Nowhere does it say one must carry it at all times.

As usual, The Nation gets it wrong and some crooked BiB figures he can make a bit of cash.

Anything The Nation reports should be taken with a grain of salt. Or better yet ignored.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

Yeh, exactly what I was worried about- all this uncertainty, and ill advised comments from the junta, is opening up the way to extortion from a few chancers. Great shame. There is little doubt that Thailand has gone down recently, one can only hope it corrects itself. Land of samiles, my arse. I've had no problems btw, doesn't seem to effect us in the sleepy NE, but have heard a few stories from business owners down sarf too. People take advantage of disorder and uncertainty- maybe we are returning to the halcyon days of the early 90's & 80's.

That's the same spot where they try to nail tourists for 2K if they toss a cigarette butt on the ground (not that I'm in favor of that sort of activity and I dislike both smoking and littering, but this is a targeted action designed to extort a bribe)- no doubt it's the same 'cops' pulling this particular scam.

What I was thinking. I would have been surprised if it had happened in a non tourist area.
