Years in Thailand are like pints in a hot beer garden

First one - Ahhh I needed that. I should go home now
Second one - That was good. Not as good as the first though
Third one - I should have only had two, but WTF
Fourth one - Bloated, dying for a piss, and everything getting blurred
Fifth one - Fook I need to go to work tomorrow. I'm gonna regret this.....

No intention of moving back home longterm, but will probably head back in a couple of years to do my PGCE. Had a great 10 years in Thailand, Myanmar and now Mongolia. Like getting to know other cultures, trying new foods and picking up new languages too much to head back to Little Ol' England for good. Plus, no school in England is going to pay for my housing, private healthcare, flights for holidays and a private pension- so living overseas it is, the positives outweigh the small amounts of negatives, that are mostly quibbles.

^ So the answer is yes, you're glad you left Thailand to live in other places?

It's ten years this week since I resigned from my office job in central Bkk. I'd secured a transfer back to the London office, but the economic situation saw that evaporate before I was able to begin there. They began shedding their existing staff and didn't want anyone transferring in. I ended up spending late 2008 and early 2009 travelling around SE Asia planning how to best re-enter UK life and its economic turmoil.

I dread to think what life would be like now if I'd not had the good sense to stop living in Thailand back then. I could have easily stayed, but as my original plan to stay two years had already extended to nearly 3.5 years, it was well time to go.

I wasn't looking for a new long-term home country. Had I been I would probably have found a job in Australia back in 2005 instead of Thailand. I simply don't see the point in settling long-term in a country like Thailand before retirement age. I find short visits of a month to six weeks far more enjoyable, but I've even got bored of that now. Once you've been there a few years there's no novelty and nothing new to experience, but that long list of downsides keeps growing.

            I'm a gypsy and I don't really identify to a 'back home'.

It isn't shite.. home country to me is where I grew up, have roots and basically spent the most time (30 plus years).
