  • A forum is either made or broke by its members. If its slow it is because many of us are not contributing. I am one that has been reticent in my posting.

    • Whether a forum is "busy" or not can often be rather deceptive. If you take a closer look they might not be quite as busy as you think.

I just read a thread on TD that was also posted here. About 12 different people were discussing the topic there compared to one or two here. Now is that such a huge difference, two people or twelve? Not that much difference I don't think.

I remember once when someone was incessantly banging on about how fantastic their forum was (no names) I did a quick calculation and worked out that over 90% of all the hundreds of thousands posts on the site were made by just 20 posters! Is that a busy forum? Not for me it isn't, that's a very very busy 20 people which isn't the same thing.

How busy a forum is should be measured by how many DIFFERENT people post on it. Don't be fooled by the huge number of posts made by a very small group of people.

Could you apply the same analysis to the membership posting here? That would be an interesting statistic that would shed light on your hypothesis.

What hypothesis would that be exactly?

This forum is very quiet with very few contributing members, when have I said any different?

My point is that on the grand scale of things, a forum with 12 people posting on a thread instead of 2, is barely any different. It all depends on what scale you look at things. You might think TD is Man Utd and Thailand Chatter is Torquay Utd, where as I see them both in the same league about 6 places apart.

As for the forum where 90% of the posts were written by just 20 people, again, same league just a team that had been around longer and had a chance to build up a slightly bigger fan base and probably sitting somewhere in between the other two in the league.

If you think a forum where 20 people wrote practically every single post is a huge success, then I'm afraid you are hugely mistake.

All three forums are small just to slightly different degrees.

What normal and intelligent person with interesting things to say would share that he spent valuable time and effort counting hundreds and thousands of posts made by just 20 people?
Surely a forum that can boast hundreds & thousands of posts on it would be deemed busy in anyone's book no matter how many people were posting and contributing to it..........
              What say you Topper?

                • Abby reckons a thread with 12 posters chatting/commenting is no more busy that a thread with 1 or 2, wait, what's that you say.. 1 ?
yes well I have noticed recently a couple of threads with one poster chatting to himself.

                  Guess who that poster was.

Yes dear, and most men had their fill of "jerking off" conversations by the time they were 14.

The difference being of course Socal I have no desire to tell you what I think of you. Imagine spending your days talking to people you thought were boring on the Internet. How boring is that!

                    • Here's a little tip, a simple question you can ask yourself. Most people won't need to of course but for those "special" members it may prove invaluable.

Just before you hit the "Submit Reply" button ask yourself one simple question. "Would I have replied to that post the way I just did if someone else had written it?"

If the answer is yes then by all means carry on. However, if somebody else had written the exact same post you would have replied to it completely differently or probably not replied at all, then you are proving yourself to be a gormless cretin the second you hit that button.

Anybody so immature, socially inept and emotionally crippled, they would reply differently to a forum comment just because of the anonymous user name that wrote it, will ultimately be one of the main reasons a forum is slow.

I'd agree. It's not only about how many different people post on a thread, but that and how many different threads are posted upon.

As the boss said, its about community. For example, what would 100K of say, Jeff's posts really equal in the idea of building a community in comparison to one travel thread written by Phuketbound, even though both of them have the IQ of the average house fly?

Post count doesn't equal activity unless it generates page views. A good admin tries to turn page views into reasons for a guest that's just viewing to join and post. This means the admin/mods have to take a rather active part in growing the community, rather than sitting back and waiting for the magic to happen on it's own.

We must be talking about different forums then mate. The one I'm talking about where all the posts were made by the same 20 people, was full of nothing but mental morons arguing with each other, talking about what 'nics' they were trolling other forums with, who was multi nicking as who, petty childish name calling, obsessive stalking that seemed to have been ongoing for years, grown men literally infatuated by other anonymous grown men and all manner of other pathetic juvenile things grown men should be embarrassed to have had anything to do with.

It was effectively Teak Door but 50 times smaller. Not sure what forum you're talking about but it clearly can't be the same one as I am. This one had a tiny clique of nut jobs, which it stands to reason didn't ever achieve a welcoming community, otherwise there would have been more than just the 20 people posting on it.

Twenty people does not a community make.

There's only so much one or two people can possibly do. They provide the blank canvas (at a personal cost to themselves) it's then down to everybody else to put in what they want to get out.

So basically you want someone to start a forum, pay for it, then dedicate their life to making it entertaining just for you??

Don't want much do you topper!

how many ppl are going to talk about the jacking off thread in other posts. Its even been talked about at TD

Nobody wants to talk about jakcing off but they want to talk about a thread that is about jakcing off

                              • Perhaps a small community of 20 people.

Or a small community of circle-jerkers of at least twenty jerks. Don't you think?
