  • Cuba tries protesters en masse

The Cuban regime is conducting summary trials in which up to 30 people are convicted at a time for participating in the recent mass protests, an international organization of jurists warns.

Details: The hearings are being carried out without lawyers present and without the accused even knowing what the charges are against them, per the group Cuban Prisoner’s Defenders.

By the numbers: Over 500 people are known to be detained. At least a dozen of them are minors, and parents say they haven’t been able to reach most of them.
    • Reports of beatings of those teenagers who were in or near the July 11 protests also have surfaced as the government eases its shutdown of the internet.

The big picture: Cuba has the highest rate of COVID-19 contagion per capita in Latin America, an infection rate nine times higher than the world average this past week, one of the reasons people in the island participated in the mass protests.

    • Cuban embassy in Paris attacked by gasoline bombs

Cuba’s embassy in Paris was attacked by gasoline bombs, according to Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, who blamed U.S. government for "continuous campaigns against our country that encourage these behaviors and for calls for violence."

Rodriguez announced in a tweet on Monday night that the embassy was attacked with Molotov cocktails, but did not reveal any additional information regarding the incident.

The Foreign Ministry’s International Press Center later revealed that the attack, which reportedly took place around midnight, involved three Molotov cocktails, two of which hit the embassy, according to The Associated Press. It reportedly sparked a fire at the embassy.

The press center reported that Cuban diplomats put out the flames as French firefighters and police arrived at the site.

Rodriguez blamed the U.S. government for the attack in his tweet.

“I hold the U.S. Government responsible for its continuous campaigns against our country that encourage these behaviors and for calls for violence, with impunity, from its territory,” he said, according to the AP.

Cuba has accused the U.S. of being behind a social media campaign to foment unrest in the country.

A number of Cuban embassies have come under attack in recent weeks, the AP reported, as demonstrators protest for and against Cuba’s government in response to anti-government demonstrations that broke out earlier this month.

Protesters recently painted the phrase "Cuba Libre" on the street outside the Cuban embassy in Washington, D.C., which translates to "free Cuba."

Anti-government protesters participated in one of the largest demonstrations in memory earlier this month, after frustration regarding food shortages and high prices driven by the COVID-19 pandemic reached a boiling point.

Dozens of activists and journalists have been arrested since the demonstrations began, and at least one person has been killed.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, following the outbreak protest, criticized U.S. “politics of economic asphyxiation” toward the country.

“Is it not very hypocritical and cynical that you block me ... and you want to present yourself as the big savior?” Díaz-Canel said, according to Reuters. “Lift the blockade ... and then we will see what this people, that has achieved an immense social work despite what is practically a war economy, is capable of.”

Certain travel and trade policies toward Cuba were pulled back during the Obama administration, until former President Trump reimposed restrictions.

Cuba has claimed that the U.S. encouraged a social media campaign meant to destabilize the island nation, which is experiencing a severe economic crisis driven in large part by the pandemic, the AP reported.

The U.S. and roughly 20 other countries signed a statement on Monday that called on Cuba to “respect the universal rights and freedoms of the Cuban people, including the free flow of information to all Cubans.”

Austria, Brazil, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Guatemala, Greece, Honduras, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, South Korea and Ukraine also signed the statement.: https://thehill.com/policy/internati...gasoline-bombs

      • Biden to announce sanctions, other efforts to address crisis in Cuba amid protests

President Biden will announce sanctions against one entity and two Cuban individuals this afternoon and provide details on his administration's efforts to improve internet connectivity in Cuba, a senior administration official said Friday.

Why it matters: After initially hoping to place the issue on the back burner, the White House has recently ramped up its focus on Cuba amid protests on the island and in the United States, congressional backlash and political pressure from the South Florida Cuban community.
        • The president is also expected to make announcements on remittances and plans for U.S. embassy augmentation, the official said.
        • The official noted that the administration is in talks with private sector providers about the possibility of providing wireless LTE communications to the Cuban people.
        • "Given the protest of July 11, it is important for U.S. diplomats to engage directly with the Cuban people and if we can do that in a way that ensures the safety of U.S. personnel, that is something that we will undertake," he said, noting that the president would announce more details later this afternoon.

The details: The president will meet today with Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), a Cuban-American, and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), among other political and community leaders and artists.
        • Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), an outspoken voice on Cuban issues, is not expected to attend the meeting.
        • The meeting follows a series of engagements by Cedric Richmond and the Office of Public Engagement with the Cuban-American community, the official said.

What they're saying: "We're gonna do everything we can to keep Cuba on the front burner, so we can keep the conversation on the rights of the Cuban people and their rights to manifest peacefully," the official said on the call with reporters.

Be smart: Cuba is a tricky political issue for Democrats, who are split on the matter. The president was defeated by Donald Trump in South Florida during the 2020 election, and Democrats fear similar results, particularly in the upcoming midterms, if they mishandle the situation.: https://www.axios.com/biden-announce...58f60eb18.html

        • Biden needs to think about wanting to be beholden to the far right-wing Cuban exile nut jobs or actually normalise relations

          • I would side with normalization. Let us back in. In time, the Cubans on the island will come around.

The Cubans in Miami are not going to ever get back what they (or their family) lost.: https://www.reuters.com/article/usa-...-idUSL5N21Z6FB

The old cold-war mentality still sits within US politics, but after so many decades the tiny Caribbean island is yet to be browbeaten into submission by these tactics. I firmly believe it is solely due to the mongrel Cuban fascists in Florida that has stopped progress. Pandering to these morons has been paramount to polls - heck, even other Latinos/x think Cubans are weird.
imagine if the US had normalised relations . . . the Cuban regime would have crumbled a long, long time ago and Cuba would have been prosperous - domino effect.

                            • U.S. imposes sanctions on Cuban officials over violent response to protests

The Treasury Department on Friday sanctioned two Cuban officials and a Cuban military unit over the government's violent response to peaceful protests that took place on the island in July.

The big picture: The protests were the largest demonstrations against the communist government in decades as the country faces one of its worst economic crises.

Details: The department is specifically sanctioning Romarico Vidal Sotomayor Garcia and Pedro Orlando Martinez Fernandez of the Cuban Ministry of Interior and the Tropas de Prevención (TDP), a unit from the Cuban Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces.
                              • The two men were found to have acted on behalf of the Cuban Ministry of the Interior, which is considered to have been responsible for serious human rights abuses.
                              • Meanwhile, the Treasury Department said that the TDP was "involved in a violent engagement with a protestor."

What they're saying: "The Treasury Department will continue to designate those who enable the Cuban government to perpetuate human rights abuses against peaceful demonstrators," said Andrea Gacki, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
                              • "Today’s action shines a spotlight on additional perpetrators responsible for suppressing the Cuban people’s calls for freedom and respect for human rights."

The other side: "I reject the US opportunistic measures against Cuba's Ministry of Interior officers and Armed Forces Prevention Troops," said Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on Twitter.
                              • "Such measures reflect double standards of a government used to manipulation and lies to maintain the blockade against Cuba," he added.

                              • Biden administration sanctions Cuban officials over human rights abuses

The Treasury Department on Thursday imposed additional sanctions on Cuban officials over their violent response to peaceful protests that occurred on the island last month.

The big picture: The department said it was the fourth round of sanctions since the beginning of the protests, which started to call attention to the widespread food and medicine shortages.

Details: The sanction targets Roberto Legra Sotolongo and Andres Laureano Gonzalez Brito of the Cuban Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR), as well as Abelardo Jimenez Gonzalez of the Cuban Ministry of Interior (MININT).
                                • The men were seen as having worked with entities whose members are considered to have been responsible for serious human rights abuse.
                                • The Treasury Department had also sanctioned two Cuban officials and a Cuban military unit last week.

What they're saying: "The Treasury Department will continue to hold accountable those who enable the Cuban government to perpetuate human rights abuse," said Andrea Gacki, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
