      More Cuba info for Americans

The administration of President Barack Obama announced on Thursday that after half a century of restrictions, Americans are finally free to go to the Caribbean island of Cuba without having to ask for permission. Or did it?

You might think the new rules, which will take effect Friday as part of a historic shift in Cuba policy under Obama, are a little confusing. They could be deliberately so. The government appears to be easing the restrictions as much as possible within the bounds of the restrictive trade embargo still in place. This naturally creates a certain ambiguity.

To help steer through this fog, GlobalPost provides some pointers to help travelers going to Cuba.

Can any American go to Cuba?

Not quite. The United States Treasury has a list of reasons for which American citizens can go to Cuba. It does not include general tourism. However, the list is broad and open to interpretation. It includes religious activities, humanitarian projects, artistic performances, journalism, academic work, and family visits. You will no longer need to obtain permission from the Treasury for this trip, so it is up to you to decide if you qualify.

Do I need to take stacks of cash?

No. A major change is that US credit and debit cards will work in Cuba. The practice of taking bundles of bills in your socks should be over. But Elmer Castillo, who organizes trips throughIn Touch With Cuba, warns it could take some time for the ATM machines to actually begin working. "The bank in Cuba needs to sign agreements with the bank in America and agree on the terms, which could take a while," Castillo says.

What do I need from the Cuban government?

The Cuban government provides US citizens with a permit for their visit at a cost of $75 from an office in Washington. Travel agencies are allowed to help visitors obtain these agreements, and they can also do so without the Treasury's special permission.

Where do the flights leave from?

Flights to Havana currently leave from Miami and Tampa and there are plans to open a flight from New York. However, they are charter flights, which are normally booked through the special agencies organizing Cuba travel.

Can I bring cigars and rum back from Cuba?

A little. The new rules allow US visitors to Cuba to bring back $400 in souvenirs, but that includes just $100 worth of tobacco and alcohol at Cuban prices.

How long will these new rules last?

It is difficult to gauge, but anticipate more changes. The Treasury is expected to issue more thorough guidelines on how these new rules will work. The real shift would be for the US government to actually end the trade embargo law. This would need a vote in Congress. While some prominent Republicans have said they are against ending it, others could support the president. Watch for that battle soon.

Seppo's are just trying to cozy up with the Wetbacks before Putin does.

Cuz obviously Putin is PISSED that the US is on his border. So why wouldn't he get as close to the US's border as he can. Hopefully Putin can give them a better deal.

It's not 'free' it's just more of the same -- wealth redistribution.

There are real people who will have to pay for it.

Sounds like you are part of the 1% Tex. How about subbing a newish cyber mate, I could do with a few new trinkets

Wealth redistribution has to happen to keep any economy alive. If only one person can buy a car, then the factory producing cars shut down. We all live in a great Pyramid scheme. Its got squashed down with a spire into the states sphere.

Also economies boom when more people are employed they create consumer demand. SO instead of the young who just got out of school paying banks for 20 years to pay off their college debts, they can actually buy cars instead of paying off the banks who leant them money from the 1%.

It won't happen cause congress will vote him down. But not a bad mid to long term economic incentive plan to keep an economy going.

I know social nothing is free. Taking a pee n a public washroom is not free, but it is there for the public good. Some dutch people have gone further with this notion of spending to create a society that functions in a way that is renewable, and created what some say is one of the best welfare states in the World.

HAVANA, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Retired Cuban leader Fidel Castro on Monday appeared to lend his support to talks with the United States in his first comments about his longtime adversary since both countries agreed last month to restore diplomatic ties.

But Castro stopped short of an enthusiastic endorsement of the rapprochement, announced on Dec. 17 by his younger brother and Cuba's current president, Raul Castro, and U.S. President Barack Obama.

"I don't trust the policy of the United States nor have I had an exchange with them, but this does not mean ... a rejection of a peaceful solution to conflicts or the dangers of war," Fidel Castro, 88, said in a statement published on the website of Cuba's Communist Party newspaper Granma.

The United States and Cuba held historic high-level talks last week in Havana that are expected to lead to the re-establishment of diplomatic ties severed by Washington in 1961.

"Any peaceful or negotiated solution to the problems between the United States and the peoples or any people of Latin America that doesn't imply force or the use of force should be treated in accordance with international norms and principles," Fidel Castro said.

"We will always defend cooperation and friendship with all the peoples of the world, among them our political adversaries."

He took power in a 1959 revolution and spent much of his 49 years in power railing against the United States, which never succeeded in many attempts to oust him.

He was finally forced into retirement in 2008 by poor health and was succeeded by his brother Raul, who is now 83.

"The president of Cuba has taken the pertinent steps in accordance with his prerogatives and the powers given to him by the National Assembly the Communist Party of Cuba," Fidel Castro said of his brother in the statement.

His silence on the issue had led to speculation over his health and whether he supported his brother's rapprochement with the United States.

On Jan. 12, he sent a letter to friend and retired Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona that squelched rumors he had died.
