Family of deceased Malaysian crash victim to pay RM31K compensation to Thai truck owner
BANGKOK: The family of a Malaysian who was killed after his motorcycle crashed into a pickup truck in Phatthalung two weeks ago has agreed to pay 250,000 baht (RM31,040) to the owner of the truck.
The agreement was reached following a meeting between the Malaysian consul in Songkhla, Mohammed Afandibin Abu Bakar, Thai police and representatives of the Maltha (Malaysia-Thailand) Riders Club.
The meeting was held to settle a dispute after an unidentified Maltha member was killed in a road accident in Phatthalung's Pabon district on Jan 16.
The rider was killed but the Thai driving the pickup demanded the compensation on grounds that the Malaysian tourist had been riding his motorcycle in the wrong lane.
During the meeting, the family of the Malaysian was told that it was not a fine, but compensation for damages to the pickup truck.
The family agreed to pay the money next month in Phatthalung's Pa Bon district.
It was also agreed that the Malaysian consulate would hold seminars to inform Malaysian motorcyclists and motorists of Thai traffic laws so that they would not cause accidents while driving in Thailand.
