The slums (Favelas) generate the bad reputation and if you avoid going there...all I can say in all the time I lived there I never once felt threatened. Reckon San Francisco is more dangerous with all the human feces and spent needles littering the sidewalks these days...

Small villages along the Baja California coast in Mexico, people genuinely nice. Even my Thai wife reckoned that the people and the place nicer than LOS. beer cold, and taste free, so should appeal to mericans. So laid back. Hard to believe the murder rate with the drug war going on. Only heard semi automatic fire once.Comment
