  • The Great Boxed Wine Scandal of 2018.

There's been scandals to hit Thailand, and there's been SCANDALS to hit Thailand.... but this latest one is the worst in living memory.

A few months ago the distinguished gentlemen among us may have noticed that the cheap boxes of wine.... Peter Vella... Mont Clair..... were getting rather thin on the ground.

    Then stock ran out.

Rumours abounded on the grapevine of a product and price reshuffle.

Talk of the 5 liter boxes being replaced with 2 liter boxes and sold at the same price shocked the public.

Today... it seems.... the nightmare is real.

    Mont Clair is back.

But in a 3 Liter box.

No price listed, the security guard said 1,199thb.

    Previously 5 liters for 969thb.

    Street protests are being organized.

BTW, killer Wine Spritzer recipe for a hot day.

1 liter of chilled white wine.
1/2 a glass of club soda.
    Slice of lime.

Sign me up for the protest. I will come dressed in old boxes of celebration and castle creek.

In fact, this is so outrageous that we have stopped buying wine completely. Just too expensive as we were on 6 boxes a month. We cut back to four but the new prices are the last straw.

So, the last couple of nights wife is back on beer and I am back on Lao Khao but it won't last long. The only sensible thing to do is give up booze completely after the holiday.

Yepper I noticed the shortage a few weeks ago, stocked up on 2 liter bottles for me Mum, she only drinks a glass a day.

I stopped drinking completely about 2 months ago. Easily saved enough to by my last Bitcoin.

A crap wine which is not really what most consider wine. It is "fruit wine". A concoction resembling wine but in fact can contain mostly any friuit. All done to take advantage of a tax loophole in Thailand's ridiculous sin taxes.

You want a decent wine avoid anything labeled "fruit wine". You will pay more but for me the extra cost is worth it.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

BTC also losing around 6,000,000% of its value also would have helped.

Though looks like it may have bottomed out and on the rise again.

The current world events, and the slipping hegemony of the USA petro-dollar are having a big effect.
We are about to see another BTC moon shot.
It's going to take nerves of steel to hang on....

                Yup.

And looks like they're gonna make up the difference with more profit.

When I can find some free time ( a rarity ) I might have a bash at making my own. Plenty of YouTube videos to learn from. I have made beer here before and it were rit tasty so it might be worth the effort.

Last week I thought that if I mixed a bottle of Siam Sato
( which is 7 degrees proof and 5 times sweeter than Hock),with a decent measure of Lao Khao I might end up with something like a dry white wine with attitude.

I didn't. The result was a vile concoction that only drank with reluctance.

A bit like that joke about the Avon lady visiting potential customers in an apartment block. By the time she gets to the top she has had so many cups of tea that it gives her flatulence. She holds it all in until she is alone in the lift descending to the ground floor when she finally lets rip and the resulting smell is overpowering. Realising that if any one else enters the lift they will know the smell came from her , she reaches into her bag of samples for some pine air freshener and gives the lift a good spray.
When the lift reaches the ground floor and the doors open a young man enters and almost gags.

                  " Bloody he'll , smells like someone just shat a pine tree ! "

Which is like mixing sato and Lao khao. They do not blend at all well.

It's a pity that you're not still over in Bang Bua Thong. That (beer and wine making) is an experiment I would be all too happy to help in.

...don't know what has to do with wine - sorry, I'll get my hat...
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

It's kind tough to get beer making supplies here in Thailand.

Years ago I made a potent batch of mead with honey from Chiang Mai. I had to get the champagne yeast from Singapore. Mead making requires a more alcohol resistant yeast.
The drawbacks about mead are the long time frame required; six months fermentation, one year aging in the bottle.

This is why you don't see many commercial mead.

Ya probably could make a sort of drinkable brew with pineapple juice and bread yeast.

Yes.....When we moved to Bangyai from the city it was a nice quiet suburb . Had everything you needed but was only a 30 minute drive to Sanam Luang.

Over the years it became a boom town and all the development made it too busy for our liking so we moved to the boonies. Since moving here things have also developed and we now have a Big C just 3 kilometers away. Biggest store for 100 k in any direction.

As for the brewing, the key was in the airtight water bottles we used ( along with a bit of plumbers tape). When you opened a bottle you could hear the gas fizz out. Those beer kits came from the UK. Not seen any here.

Off topic - the skytrain is going to help congestion. I'd like to see that get going sooner than later. The huge Park & Ride has been built along Kanchanipesik (Hwy 9) for a couple of years now.

That park and ride at Bangyai is huge. Trouble is crowbaring people out of their cars and getting them onto public transport. Last I heard was the purple line was still losing money despite completion of the link to the underground.

Wouldn't want to go back there now. Will only get more congested in future.
