  • Easter break in Mindoro, Philippines.

Before, during and after Easter this year, my lady and I spent some time travelling in the 2 provinces of Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro.

The Island of Mindoro is the 7th largest Philippine island.

My lady's home town is Victoria, about midway down the east coast of Oriental Mindoro.

The week before easter, we travelled to the south to Bulalacao. Then spent easter with her family, and then travelled to the north, one night stopover in Puerto Galera and then to Tuko beach in Occidental Mindoro.

I made a few videos of our trip.

    I hope you enjoy.

part one is from Manila to Bulalacao.

I was really surprised that hardly any tourists go there. We only saw 1 other non-asian the whole time we were there.

So I assume that everyone else were Filipinos. Its nice to find somewhere with no Chinese...

Its less than 75 klm north west of Boracay, so I guess its a bit the same, without the crowds.

      Part 2.

After Bulalacao, we headed north to spend a couple of days with my lady's family in Victoria.

It has been a tradition for the last few years for her to treat them all to a couple of days with an overnight at the beach in Pinamalayan, which is the nearest beach to Victoria.
It has black sand instead of the white sands that you see on most post cards.

This is the first time that I went along. Unfortunately something got messed up with the accommodation booking so we ended up just going for the day this year. (probably really long enough for me anyway)

They were all very appreciative. Most of them couldn't really afford to do it otherwise.
      Everyone had a good time.

        part 3.

On Easter Sunday, we left Victoria and went north to Puerto Galera.

It was just an overnight in PG and were picked up the next morning to travel to Tuko Beach, in Occidental Mindoro.

Tuko Beach is fairly isolated 2/3s of the way from Puerto Galera to the Port of Abra de Ilog.
There's no roads nearby, so the only way in is by boat.

From PG, it takes about 40 minutes (20 minutes if you come from Abra de Ilog)

Its one of my favourite places on earth. This was our 4th visit.

The resort is very small. There was only 6 other people staying there on this trip and that's more than any other time we went. Its owned and run by a German lady, who really does a great job.

Great videos as I said on the other forum as well. I hold the the Phils as a special place, as I sponsor a few children to attend school there about four hours north of Manilla. I know them personally and know the money goes towards the tuition for the children.

Many people see the touristy side of the Philippines, but there are so many poor parts of the Philippines . Anyway, it looks like you are enjoying which is all that matters. I've heard good things about Palawan, Cebu, Mindoro, and Puerto Galera.

Yes, my lady comes from a poor family. Her parents had a small business, making candy which was distributed all around Mindoro. But her father went blind and her mother is also not very well.

She is the middle of 5 siblings.
Her oldest sister worked to provide money for my lady to attend university, as well as supporting the parents.
Then once graduated and working, my lady took over supporting her parents as the older sister had a baby, and also providing now for her younger sister while she went to university.

Currently, the 2 other sisters are supporting the parents, and like is so common in TH, the parents look after the children of the 2 sisters. (now 8 & 4)

My lady still sends them a small amount, but I don't think its much.
She is however, sponsoring a couple of her cousins education.
A couple of bright kids, who would otherwise have to drop out and find work.

One of them, had thought about dropping out and looked for a job at the local market.
Once the salary was offered at PHP80 per day (about USD1.54) she decided maybe school is a better idea...

^That's fantastic that your lady helps out when she can. It is kind of a sad life for many of these children who basically find work instead of going to school because they just can't afford it. My Korean friend's father runs a school in San Jose,, it is a christian college. They do a lot of fund raising in Seoul for the school which is where I found out about the cause.
One little boy I sponsored right until he graduated. He would send me letters a lot and tell me what was happening in his life. He told me he was gay and his father wasn't accepting it and that he moved in with a family friend etc.. anyway, I lost touch with him after he moved in sadly. The other girl I was sponsoring, she was only 7 and she died last November. It was a very sad day for everyone. She developed scarlet fever and died after a fe days. I guess her little sister is now starting school so I will be helping her, but the family is grieving. She really was just a little angel.

                This is little Ruby (RIP)

I should finally get around to visiting Baguio, a mountain-top city with an eternal spring climate, around the end of the year. Come.

I won't be free until after the 17th (Dec) or so, but I'm very tempted. Seen a few videos online.

Always thought it was a bit scraggy, but Bangkok isn't exactly a modern thinking metropolis either, and Flippers are great at english. Not heard good things about the food, but who cares anyway
