You're not listening.

85% of the population, almost all of whom moved there from other parts of Thailand and are having to return to those other parts of Thailand, have been hit hard because they chose to peg their lives to tourist income. The island itself is fine and recovering ecologically from decades of tourism industry abuse, and many of the locals are loving how quiet it is, including the fact that they can enjoy their own beaches for the first time in a generation.

Ya I get that, I just don't know if they can survive well because I believe the Thais mostly rely on tourism to thrive. I am sure they are enjoying it, being a ghost town and clean beaches.
We don't know for sure if they are all enjoying it though if most of the hotels/restaurants may have to close due to lack of tourists.

I didn't say they are all enjoying it. You're attacking a straw man. Many locals that have been there for generations and sensibly chose to not peg their livelihoods to foreign tourists are enjoying it, of that I can assure you. They have an island to enjoy on which hundreds of billions of development baht have been spent.
