  • $2400 USD per month enough?

I have visited Thailand 6 times, love it, and want to move here on a retirement visa. Can I survive decently in either Bangkok or Pattaya on $2400 USD per month that I get from my company retirement? I am 62, and will get another $1400 from Social Security when I turn 65. I have no girlfriend currently, so for now it is just me. I like to eat and drink a few, or more than a few, beers on the weekends.

Anyone have a budget of expenses that might help?

    Thank ya' all!

Might be a bit tight on that level of income Fatty Boy. Especially in either Bangkok or Pattaya. Doable once you get your SS though.

A better option would be "Upcountry".

All depends on what you want to do with it. Hit the bars and whores as many do then you're way out. If you plan to rent on the outskirts of Bangkok and chill with the odd night out then it is highly doable.

Rent on a nice house in places like Min Buri around 15k per month, less for an apartment or small condo. Same style of home in the centre you need to triple. I don't drink plus I'm a complete boring bastard. Additionally, I'm from Yorkshire which helps!

If you like your booze on a regular basis and like to mingle with like-minded drinkers, your fooked unless you head out to a village. Then, there's the risk of being seduced by a local lass telling you how handsome you are where your money will pour down the drain by other means.

It all depends on you, not your budget so much in my opinion.

Rents in Ao Nang, Krabi for a two bedroom apt blocks back from the beach is 9K THB per month.

          Hey Big Guy,

With your pension and SS, I think it will suffice.

Depends on your preferences and lifestyle, of course.

Around 76k baht, then up to 120k in 2 and a bit years. Should be okay once you're settled. Certainly won't be a highflyer, but should be comfortable enough.

              My 2 cents:

              Learn some language right off.
Enroll for a couple of months at the Nisa language school.
Rent a room at the Rompho Mansion by the month, they have a nice 25 meters pool and steam room to work off the fat, and get into shape.
Go walking or cycling in the lovely Lumpini park.
If you're a cyclist by inclination, I recommend a Brompton folding bike, which you can take with on the MRT and BTS.

Budget wise you should be ok as long as you don't drink and spend too much time with the gogo girls.

Living in Thailand could be a good exercise to shape up fast or go down the drain really fast. Up to you.

After a couple months language school, start exploring the country, there's a lot to see and some of the smaller Thai towns quite charming and delightful.
If you're smart, you will avoid the big tourist shitholes like Pattaya, HuaHin, Phuket.

                Agree completely.

Keep up with exercise, and studying Thai a few days a week will be positive, fun, and great socially.

I personally need some sort of reason to get up, otherwise I'd be up until 4am and sleeping until midday everyday, within a week.

So I enjoy getting up, doing the school run, and doing some kilometers in a park. Stop off for some shopping on the way home and usually cook up a fresh lunch and dinner.

Adding a full-time Thai language course to that soon enough for 2 hours in the afternoon 3-5 days a week.

Keeping yourself somewhat positively occupied and healthy when retired is important.

Daily morning outdoor exercise and studying Thai 3-4 days a week is great for this.

Were I wanting to retire in SE Asia, it would be a sea view house or condo on Penang Island with a couple of long weekends per month in Bangkok via a short flight.

You can survive perfectly fine on that, anywhere in Thailand. In rural Thailand, you'd have a job spending the money.

Rent, don't buy (I'm assuming you are single?); A taste for decent wine will blow a hole in your budget, save it for special.

Are there any advantages IYO (other than more whores and nightlife) to Pattaya over Penang?

Thai style? Or Western? I cringe at the thoughts of motosais buzzing by all night, loud karaoke music playing and the occasional Thai domestic violence episode screams wafting into my abode!

^^ Several, depends on the punter. For a start, Pattaya is much cheaper and easier to get to.
If you are a boozer, foodie, ladies man &/or golfer, that goes double.
Neither is much of a beach destination really, unless you like swimming in sludge- or are willing to get out a bit.
If the traffic crossing the border northwards every weekend is an indication, Thailand still has Malaysia beat on the 'entertainment' front. Certainly, many western expats prefer the 'exotic yet liberal' Buddhist aspect of Thailand to the more socially conservative, Moslem Malaysia.
Pattaya & surrounds also has a much larger western expat community than Penang, with a range of activities, restaurants, clubs etc to match. Also, lifestyles- you can live in central Pattaya, or out near the lake, depending on preference. Quite different.
The main visible tourist traffic to Penang these days is distinctly mid east/ Arabic- this may be a problem to some.
Bayan Lepas airport is small- limited destinations. SUV is massive- many destinations. It takes about the same time to get from Batu Ferringhi to Bayan Lepas, as Pattaya to swampie. Then there's the new Sattahip airport development, even closer.

Western style off the main street(s) - quiet neighborhoods.

PM me for more info if interested.
