I always wonder if I am seen as a old farht looking for little boy fun when I arrive at the border. I was even told off for not speaking Thai at the border.
I reckon that I am very lucky to have the chance to know another country so different than the ones I have already lived in. My Mrs tells me that she only wants to live in Thailand if her mother gets sick. So I am happy to be a visitor, at the moment. No need to try to be something I am not. So each year Thailand becomes home for a couple of months and I am happy to be The Canadian.
As for resentment, I agree this can be true BUT it completely depends on where one lives. Building a McMansion in Isaan around a bunch of poor folks living old Teak shacks and huts is not only in bad taste but the foreigner should expect a lot of flack and disapproval from the locals. I have seen a few in my travels and I always shake my head. I could never understand why they would do that. Maybe it was to show off but that always backfires in any country.
I am the opposite as you in that I really like living here in Thailand for a host of reasons and feel at home and enjoy returning to the states to visit for a short period of time. Last visit it appeared that most Americans are not happy at all which is sad when most live in excess of the rest of the world, Its likely the current political situation they are battling through. People seemed to be getting crazier and instilled with vitriol. I chat with numerous former colleagues and they say its getting really bad. I am heading back in a few months for a month for a friends wedding. I will get to see first hand whats going on.

The US has an elected leader. Thailand is run by a military junta. I'm pretty sure that there is more vitriol in Thailand. Thing is, protest is suppressed so the rose tinted specs brigade don't acknowledge the existence of unease and think they're living in a utopia sanctuary.Last edited by Exexpat; 07-10-2018, 12:10 PM.

Yeah I don't do politics or religion. Waste of time and never read those threads. Same with Thailand don't pay any attention and being I cannot fully understand Thai they could be whinging about it all and I wouldn't know the difference which is perfect.

We have one of them who ventures over here from time to time and gets his ass kicked so bad in the Soap Box it's hilarious.

I know I should not, but
Was it last year that London had more non Londoners population than People actualy born in the city.

I think the islamonutters have found that out- when those (thankfully dead) scumbags used a van as a weapon of terrorism they killed a few- but not one single Londoner. Ain't no Londoners left in central London really. And who can blame them.

Recall when visiting some friends in Newcastle, the locals 'sport' on Saturday night was a bit of 'Paki-Bashing' on the way home from the Pub.
