  • Expats attitude. What gives?

There was a recent post on FB about a guy in a life-threatening condition following a bike accident here in Thailand. Having no insurance a fellow biker posted in an expat forum asking for donations to help the guy. The response from the moderator was along the lines of, it's his own fault and the forum will take no part in such assistance. Much to the annoyment of its members, it was reposted.

Yeah, the guy should have had insurance, but...

My case, while not in the same league.

I have a product which I distribute in Thailand and offered a free product as a promo to 10 people among expat communities, and 20 on Asian. Thai, Sing, Malay. The condition was the user sent me photos of the ease of installation. Depending on the model, it is a 2-minute job literally, max 15 minutes on other models. Of all the 20 Asian users, all have sent me back photos, and additionally, linked us in their own FB pages which we didn't ask for. Out of the 10 westerners, only 2 have sent photos with the others not even responding to a polite request.

Value of each product was 2800bht to 15,000bht. Are westerners really ungrateful twats? Envious of other foreigners wishing to progress and do something other than hanging around bars and whores? I'm not sure what it is, but maybe common decency has expired among westerners!

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter as 99% of our clientele are Asian. It's just surprising as a fellow westerner.

    Pretty much.

There has been a 'Golden Rule' ever since moi started to live in LOS back in 1979 that it's going to be the Farang who rips you off sooner than the Thai.

Reckon by anecdotal and first-hand experience, it's gotten worse over time.
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

I presume you mean westerners in Thailand, not all westerners compared to all Thais.

Because try crossing a busy road in the UK and Thailand and see which people let you cross safely and which don't even notice you. See which people hold doors open for others after going through and which let it slam in your face. See which people thank park & ride bus drivers when exiting and which would rather form hideous traffic jams than lower their haughtiness by using a bus to enter a city.

In Thailand, I think pensioners are generally the happiest and nicest, as long as they aren't skint / alcoholic. It's the working age westerners who are in the main miserable selfish twats. Many seem to have a sense of entitlement despite being useless, which is probably why they ended up where they are, to lord it over the even more useless.

^Agree with the working expat part. How does it go? "No good deed goes unpunished". I discovered that with ex-work colleagues! Family, are no exception.

I dunno, but I wouldn't go near expats in Thailand to try to make money with a barge pole.

I remember being the only customer at a samui beerbar in my very early Thailand days. The middle aged expat owner was moaning that he'd put everything into the bar but customers seemed to avoid the place when they saw a westerner in charge.

He was convinced that it was all down to envy of his 'success' as he put it. I didn't know where to look.

Miserable kunts who will not even look you in the eye, ones I see are almost all in Big C, Central and other shops. Teachers are the worst, no point saying hello as they pretend they have not heard. Went up to one once and said, I said hello, mumbled hello back and then avoids me since when he sees me coming. They all look like they are contemplating suicide, but probably tell their mates back home it's paradise living here

Reminds me of a time me & the missus were heading into Issan to visit one of her Aunts and we stopped in Korat City. Got lunch at some food court there in a Mall and as we were heading back to the truck, here comes this long-legged gal out the door of the place berating her poor, meek, brow-beaten farang husband.

Looked like she had just stepped off a stage in Pat Pong...but that don't make her a bad person.

Some boys here make bad choices and then they are miserable like the ones you run into Dog...

That must have been a bit unnerving for him. Or would be for most people.

Some complete stranger comes up declaring 'I said hello!'.

I'm quite familiar with most expats with Thai gf/wives who tramp around Central Lat Prao and the surrounding supermarkets/malls.. Many lost a sense of fashion a while ago, but there's a few teachers in nice shirts and decent Thai females in tow.

Many don't raise a glance and I have nodded at a couple who returned one but only if I'm in a nice mood
I got plenty of sly photos of the odd acting ones

Isn't it mainly the guys that are just off the boat that think they (and other Caucasians) are some sort of novelty here, and thus should start greeting complete and utter strangers as they pass them in the street. Then get in their face when they are ignored lol.

IME it's the lifers, those who emigrated to Thailand as a creepy young adult and have nothing else.

Its funny you should mention this. WHen I first visited Issan with the wife I remember going into the Mall in Korat and being excited at see other Farang. Then I noticed they all looked like they All had been told they were to be shot in the morning. They would sit in groups professing loudly about what ailed them or trudged behind the wife and her family as she spends his lifes savings. Then you see the new catches in the gold stores. Paying top dollar for their love of their life.

Me I am a smug bastard. I go to the mall and turn the lady free. I always mention how beautiful the women are in Korat. SHe is always back to find me within the hour.

Coming from a place in which eye contact is normal and acknowledging another human beings existence is excepted it has always been strange when you get the eye avoidance routine. See it in North American cities. It used to piss me off, now I make a point of saying hi to everyone especially in supermarkets and the like.

Going through a supermarket consciously greeting everyone.
