  • Your favorite country in East Asia

    For me:

China - I've been to Hong Kong several times and enjoyed it it but I've zero interest in ever setting foot in the mainland.

Japan - i plan to spend more time there. Have visited twice but only for weeks instead of months, so I've never experienced living there. Will try to do 2-3 months there in the next couple of years.

Korea - I visited a girlfriend there a decade ago and found it fairly dull. No reason to return.

Taiwan - Love it. Wonderful climate, good food, lots to see and do. The only downside is the language, which I've no interest in learning and is my least favorite language to hear.

Vietnam - Cheap, interesting, and is probably a good place for TEFLers. Would like to spend time in the subtropical highland city of Dalat with its year round spring weather. Hopefully will in November. Not looking forward to horns blasting and double pricing.

Laos - A couple of spots I'd like to see, doable in a long weekend. Too primitive to want to stay any longer.

Burma - Will go when it makes itself a bit more accessable.

Cambodia - Have been once. That was enough.

Thailand - Nothing left to see or do after numerous stays totalling several years. My only reason for short stays there in recent years was my wife's work. Now that she's relocated I've no reason or desire to return.

Malaysia - Have spent several months there in the past year and a half. Lots more I want to see. Slightly more developed than Thailand, multiculturalism makes it more interesting IMO, and feels like the perfect hybrid of Thailand and the UK. Would love to buy a retirement house in the Cameron Highlands or Penang but will probably end up in Johor.

Singapore - Somewhere I love and am spending increasing amounts of time for both work and pleasure. Feels a bit claustrophobic due to having to leave the country to find wide open expanses of countryside, but that's easily done by road or air. IMO the most liveable place for westerners in Asia who aren't looking for bargain bucket locations.

Indonesia - Never been. Probably similar to Malaysia but with much less multiculturalism. Bali is on the bucket list but not a priority.

Philippines - Never been. Looks fun but poverty-riddled. Will try to spend a week there sometime, and have been meaning to visit Baguio for years.

The Hong Kong I visited 20yrs ago would be an ideal place to live, cheaper than now.

Tired of traveling and living all over the place.
Reckon Thailand suits me until I buy the farm.
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

I know a Brit who left the UK in the early 1980s to become a police officer in HK. It was basically a part of the UK then so was easy to do. I'm sure I'd have spent much more time there and probably never even bothered with Thailand had it remained so.

Walking through my favourite Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung, discussing Thailand vs Vietnam. Some surprising observations.

How much nicer would Bangkok be if it was smaller, surrounded by mountains, and full of mini jungles like KL.

Getting upset again about words on a screen isn't good for blood pressure. Look at the unhealthy state foot-stomping cujo has got himself into.

More than him as evidenced by the whacked-out opinions posted on TD

Surely it depends on what you are doing. Some places good for work & money, others for retirement.
