  • Water Fasting

For the first time ever I've begun a water fast. Previously, the longest fast I've ever done was 21 hours during Intermittent Fasting.

I am now (as of this post) on hour number 33 and have not made a deadline of when to end it so to speak, however I won't go past the 72 hour mark, when the body usually goes into ketosis.

Only water and 2 cups of green tea per day.

I'm doing it purely for health reasons as I'm now quite sure I have inflammation (chronic or acute) and and want reduce that and improve my immune system.

I know that WOE (way of eating) is the key to this, but this water fast is resetting my system.

I also want to go through autophagy.

Has anyone else had experience with water fasting?

Nope, but interested. Will read up on it and give it a go. Cheers.

Yeah, there's a lot of good information on youtube. Tons.

      It's actually very straightforward.

      I'm on hour 39.

I have a couple of days off of work, so that's why I'm doing it. I wouldn't to more than 21 hours or OMAD if I was working full-time.

I'm staying inside watching sports, movies, and doing little things around the house. Not exercising, except for a slow walk yersterday.

Earlier this afternoon I went to the supermarket to buy shampoo and some things, but the temptation started to enter my mind (food).

      I feel good right now.

When I finish this water fast (haven't decided when) I'll do a salt flush (my first salt flush ever).

I don't see any point in going beyond 24 hour (6pm-6pm) fasts.

          It's up to the individual.

My goal is to re-set and also do autophagy. Also, start to reduce and eventually eliminate inflammation.

Yeah but going to bed hungry? No thanks.

              No hunger. Seriously.

              The body adapts.

About an hour ago I had 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon of Creme of Tartar (for potassium) and 2 pinches of Himalayan Rock salt in about 13 ounces of water.

              It's very satiating.

After tomorrow I'll be back to "normal" eating.

Yeah it adapts by going catatonic and canabalising muscle mass. Not good.

Here's what I suggest. Full body workout on Saturday and Wednesday morning. Eat normally on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. But after dinner on Sunday Monday and Thursday begin a 24 hour fast. You'll reduce your weekly food intake by about 28% but not damage muscle mass.

That only happens after approximately 72 hours or so for man if he doesn't have much fat in the body. It's been studied.

                  Protein Sparing

At some point, usually between 48 to 72 hours after the start of the fast, the body realizes that taking glucose from the muscles is too wasteful. The body then goes through a process known as ketosis, where the liver produces ketone bodies from fatty acids that the brain can use as fuel; only the red blood cells will continue using the muscles for fuel. This reduces the amount the muscles are used as fuel significantly and is referred to as "protein sparing." After 72 hours, ketosis continues as long as there is enough fat in the body. Prolonged fasting can lead to a state marked by harmful levels of ketone bodies and high levels of acidity in the blood. Ketosis usually starts after 48 hours for women and 72 hours for men. Note that ketosis is different than ketoacidosis. Ketosis is usually a controlled state, set about by low-carbohydrate intake. Ketoacidosis releases far more ketone bodies and is often a result of uncontrolled diabetes, according to the Ketogenic Diet Resource website.

                  This can work.

Speaking only for myself, I rarely go more than 17 hours without a meal when I do IF, and I only do IF once or twice per week in general.

I think you've misunderstood it. Once glycogen is depleted, after around 24 hours, you start using muscle for glucose. This only stops after around 72 hours when you switch into ketosis.

As you mentioned you're doing a 72 hour fast, this would be the most damaging length as regards muscle loss. Muscle loss is minimised up to the 24 hour point and beyond the 72 hour point.

Re 24 hour fasts, I find it's easier on work days when I'm keeping myself busy. I get a bit hungry around breakfast and lunch time but once the body realises it's not getting fed it stops nagging. I feel more focused during the afternoon on those days, and avoid the post-lunch drowsy period.

It's still OK after 24 hours.

This is from Dr. Jason Fung, renowned doctor and he cites studies as well in this link.

Let me say straight up, NO.

Thomas Delaur, who's highly regarded notes these studies:

Listen to Thomas Delaur carefully and he's saying:

                        1) You'll lose less muscle from longer term intermittent fasting for weight loss than you will from continuous calorie restriction.
                        I agree entirely.

                        2) You'll get the HGH benefits from 24 hours of fasting.
I agree entirely, and don't fast for longer.

The brain will take around 150 grammes of muscle for its power supply during day two and three of a fast. Not a lot, but it's unavoidable. I don't see him saying otherwise.

One things about Thomas Delaur is that he's very knowledgeable. (I think he's a bit too heavy on the science terms but that is good for some folks and also shows he has credentials).

                          Cheers.

I'm coming close to hour 60. I will be breaking this fast in about 3-4 hours.

                            Good stuff, Boots.

Will be interesting as well to hear how your eating habits go over the next week or so after it.

                            Cheers.

He's ok, but he does contradict himself, which leads me to think he's speaking from scripts prepared by others. For example, in one video he'll recommend the best pre and post workout foods, yet in another he'll recommend that you workout during your fasting window.
