  • Do you like where you live?

Work often takes us expats to different places, some great, so O.K and others have you scouring the job boards for an escape plan.
I've just moved to Ulan Bator, it is a likable enough place if you discount the pollution and weather. It is more westernized than I was expecting, if I want it, I can get it. Housing is included with my job and is of a good standard, I live in a compound with a gym and small shops and a couple of restaurants.

Visually Mongolia is stunning, blue skies and rolling hills. The country is pretty much the world's largest campsite so there is plenty of opportunities to explore.

Lived in Mandalay for a couple of years and enjoyed that too, but it was a lot less developed. Happiest place to live for me was Thailand, even though I was on a pretty meager salary I was able to have a good lifestyle and save half of it.

    Yes.

Too cold up there in Ulan Bator for me.
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

^^^Mongolia sounds quite interesting.. you'll have to try living in a yurt! A friend spent time travelling around where you are and really enjoyed it. She said it was quite laid back, but not much to do after awhile. She didn't go when it was cold.

^So, do you like it, Pat? Nothing like the rainy days of England from what I recall...

I feel like I can appreciate where I live now. I live in quite a small town and it is very quiet (like a ghost town compared to China), and laid back overall. The town hasn't much to do, but for now I will take it. I like the complete 360 from where I just came from. It'll be the first time in five years I've spent winter in Canada, so not looking forward to the cold. I do miss snow, however. I will either get a job in a bigger city in Canada eventually or move back abroad.

Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia, is the most polluted capital in the world & the coldest capital in the world

In 2016, Ulan Bator overtook both New Delhi and Beijing as the capital with the highest air pollution levels in the world

On the coldest days, the stoves of hundreds of thousands of ger (portable round tent) district homes burn in unison. Together, they use 1 million tons of coal a year. For the poorest families, even coal is too expensive: their stoves burn plastic bottles and rubber tires

The average January low is 27.4 below (-33C) but temperatures can dip beneath -40, the point at which Fahrenheit and Celsius intersect

I love the UK as a base and as a place to work. The best things about it are:

            - family & friends
            - its stunning countryside
            - that from April to October inclusive its climate is more pleasant than pretty much everywhere in Asia, and
            - the vast array of careers available, and with some careful planning the ability to easily earn enough during British Summer Time to be free to spend British Winter Time elsewhere relaxing in the sun

I wouldn't fancy New Zealand. Too remote and seems little different to Scotland apart from being somewhat warmer & sunnier.
