  • How long have you lived in Thailand and what do you eat?

    Serious questions here:

I've been back about 3 years. I miss certain foods from the US (where I'm from) but where I currently live the western food is horrible and way overpriced. First of all, I know certain meats, cheeses, etc. cost more here and I understand that cost. However, I have not found any place serving consistently good food in a western style that would merit such price gouging and usually those places are just microwaving frozen stuff.

I don't mean to start a thread where someone can tell me we can have great burgers or fish and chips or a real steak here. I'm just curious as to how many expats on this forum eat Thai food more than their own comfort foods. I see a lot of people move here and live here but refuse to learn the language or eat the food. I mean, whats wrong with silk worms!? they're soft, chewy and delicious!

Never had crickets though, should I try them?

I've been here in Thailand near 14 years, and have evolved many ways.
First thing I learned was tourist restaurants are to be avoided.
    Most restaurants in fact suck.
Street food by in large is very good.
Local markets have an amazing array of cool fruit and veggies.

The past six months I've been trying on a total vegan diet routine on for size.
Which means mostly fixing all your own food and fruit/veggie selection.
Nuts and seeds from 7/11 or Tesco are widely available.
Makro has good selection of basic spices and herbs. and imported pasta.
I'm especially fond of the wide variety fresh mushrooms available in the local markets.
I can make some wicked good; mushroom, chili, cilantro, green pepper, garlic, onion, tomato basil, pineapple curry concoctions which go great on rice or pasta.
Basically using whatever looks good from the local market.
The local market people get to know me after a while and often help and point out the freshest items I usually like.
A lot of fun it is.

Crickets are ok, but the oil they use to fry them might annoy. The Thai eat other interesting bugs too.

Best restaurants I found were the Chinese restaurants patronized by the Thai. The little Chinese roast duck places are usually great.
Best street food are the noodle places that have 'tin gai' or chicken foot soup. (find those around BKK)

Turns out I'm too stupid to learn the language, in spite of a huge effort.

Neither of us know how to cook Thai food, so the only time we eat it is when we go out to eat or get takeout from a food stall. We rarely have Western food when we dine out.

Been here for 32 years and rarely eat Thai food unless my wife cooks it.

In fact the only food I eat weekly that has not been prepared by my wife is the Fish and Chips Friday special at Jaybees Bar in Pattaya.

15 years or so. Mainly organic and cook mostly myself. Love super spicy stuff and have become the local white monkey for viewing at the somtum place for eating the spiciest somtum that Thais dare not undertake.

You're thinking of the fermented fish some Issan folks love which gives them stomach cancer.

Bottled Naam Pla is a different entity entirely. Sold and used all over the world.
