  • New Beer From Chang

I'm probably the last one to know, but I bought these at 7Eleven here in Korat today. Haven't tried either. In case the photo is illegible, one is Black Dragon Red Beer and the other is Huntsman Cloudy Wheat Beer.

I like the Weizen style beers, but only 4%? Bit disappointing.

Even the Bear weizen beer brought out a few months (which I'm sure they're copying) is only 4.5%

As it's typically more filling than normal beer, you can drink less, and it's less %.

Not really good if you're a raging alcoholic.

        Sounds positively dreadful K. Buadhai...

I may live in LOS but 'am never drinking beer with ice in it like Thai men..

It's a scheme to consume less calories and it seems to be working. All the consumer level beers in Thailand suck anyway, so diluting them with ice makes little difference in the flavor.

BTW, I drank the Black Dragon Red Beer last night. It poured a very dark reddish brown with a creamy head that disappeared almost instantly. (I did not drink it over ice.)

There was no aroma at all. The taste was a bit sweet with a hint of molasses. Otherwise, flavorless.

I'll try the Huntsman this evening.

BTW, I just got back from a couple of weeks in Brisbane and Sydney. It was a real treat to be able to drink beer that actually has some flavor. It seems that every pub has at least half a dozen decent beers on tap. Not once did I feel the need to bother with ice.

Nice pic. Reminds me what a bar looks like. Wish I could get a decent scotch here.

Right. When I first moved to Korat (2005) there were a few bars near me that felt like real bars. They've all closed now and it seems all we have are establishments designed to be playgrounds for young adults.

I want to be able to belly up to the bar, have a decent Scotch followed by a pint of real ale.

Never going to happen in Korat.

That's the routine my father passed on to me: "Beer then whisky - kinda risky"
"Whisky then beer - never fear"

                It seems to work well.

I was told it as "Beer before liquor, never been sicker. Liquor before beer, the night is clear."

BTW, I didn't much like the Huntsman Cloudy Wheat Beer. It wasn't cloudy at all and didn't have much flavor. Less sweet than the Black Dragon.

I wouldn't buy either of these again. On the other hand, the offering from Est. 33 (Singha), Snowy Weizen, is actually OK. Not great, but at least it has some flavor; even poured over a 16 oz plastic cup full of ice.

I have a more 'pedestrian' taste in beer. A cold Leo or BeerLeo suits me fine.

Took me a few years but after Singha, Kloster (no longer available) Chang etc, Leo satisfies my palate just right.

As a comparison, Chang tastes more bitter than Leo and can give me a headache.
Leo is somewhat akin to the old Kloster Beer we used to see here in Thailand but with a fuller taste to it.
