  • My lovely new laptop

A few weeks ago I splashed out and bought myself a brand new laptop which cost me 24,000.00 Baht and it turned out to be a nice computer and I enjoyed using it. Then where I live we had a bad storm with long periods of thunder and lightning . My new laptop was connected to my home wireless router via an Ethernet cable and I normally keep the laptops power brick plugged in at all times to keep the machine battery constantly charged. As soon as I heard the thunder I instantly unplugged the Ethernet cable and pulled out the power brick connector and turned the computer off then I sat back until the storm passed over the house and the thunder and lightning stopped. Thinking to my self what a good job I had done by quickly disconnecting my brand new laptop from any thing that could possibly cause a problem relating to the storm the smile on my face as I switched back on my lovely new laptop suddenly turned to a worried look.

My brand new laptop would not turn back on no matter what I pressed no lights on the keyboard no screen springing to life . Just a completely dead laptop. From what I eventually learned my big mistake was to leave the HDMI cable plugged into the laptop that connected an external monitor and that still connected monitor although the monitor was not switched on but some how had allowed an instantaneous voltage surge due to a nearby lightning strike to connect to the laptop and fry the main mother board.

Thankfully the laptop mother board was replaced under warranty ( I never mentioned about the lightning ) to the service desk person .

There must be others here who some times live under the same storm conditions , what do you do to protect your precious computer equipment when the thunder and lightening starts.

Never had a problem with thunder/lightning but I've had 2 Toshiba laptops fail. The first failed from poor build quality. I could see the problem with a jewelers loupe which was some bad solder joints (made in China). The second Toshiba laptops chassis just fell apart after a few years, again poor build quality. So I went off Toshibas after that

I'm doing a retro thing at the moment & have had a Sony laptop since. They stopped making them around 5 years ago but I know they are of high build quality & always wanted to own 1 so I tracked sown 1 on Ebay. Works great. To bring it up to date I upgraded to a solid state drive, installed more RAM & updated to Windows 10 (free)

Sony in the past was my brand of choice as it seemed well made and of a high quality construction sadly there does not seem that many Sony laptop choices within my current budget .

Found out they had a mo-fooking recall on the expensive win10 piece of shit.

So now I be using an ancient HP machine on Win7. Which actually works respectively rather well..

What kinda burns my butt is that cheap 'Chrome-Books' aren't available in Thailand!

I'm really getting sick of windows bullshit...

              Fook Win10!

I might go back to Mac...

Still using my SonyS Series VPCSB25FH

Battery has pretty much crapped out so have to hook up to mains.
Replacement batteries are expensive and hard to obtain.

Build quality for Sony laptops is the best - Dell my second choice.
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

I've got 2 desktops, an 8 year old iMac and a newish Windoze that I use as a media server (and a couple of old MS programs that I still need to run).

I've just ordered my new iMac and am waiting for delivery.

I protect them all from power surges and spikes with a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). They are fairly cheap, and will give you protection.

I have a lenovo on windows 10 in Thailand but a toshiba on win 7 in OZ. The toshiba quality is crap although I like windows 7. I may look for a Panasonic, about the most robust laptop out there. Still hate W10 and if i upgrade the lenovo i may partition the disc and use Linux mint. I may eventually get rid of windows 10 altogether when I get better on Linux.
