Always best to keep it plugged into a surge protector power bar, and turn it off at times when it is stormy out... simple as that sorry to say.
I work full-time in the summers doing tech support, and this doesn't happen that often to be honest. Actually I've never gotten a call about a computer frying because of a storm.. but I'm sure it does happen.
Don't plug it in your monitor as you mentioned, just have the one computer plugged into the router/modem and wall (highly suggested) or surge protector power bar.

I agree with you bm regarding dell, they are my second choice too. I'm impressed with their range & quality of laptops & if I was in the market for a new one dell would be my choice
