    El Nido, Palawan

El Nido is an upmarket Coron where the mix of tourists changes to 70% western & 30% local, this town is around 15 years ahead of Coron in the tourist stakes & better marketed to overseas tourists. There’s little difference in the cost of like-for-like accommodation & island hopping tours are similarly priced but these incur a 1-off eco-tax of 200php valid for 10 days

The towns infrastructure is a lot more developed than Coron so it’s a far nicer town however the food quality at restaurants is only slightly better so it’s still pretty ordinary. They attempt to make liberty steaks at various eateries but I think they just ‘give it a shot’ after viewing a how-to video on youtube. Not sure where the beef comes from, I wasn’t going to ask. I discussed this with another tourist from Los Angeles & we agreed we don’t know how lucky we are back home with the quality of our meats

I also tried a kebab. I got ¾ of the way through it before giving up from the sickly sweet & hot sauce, then tried to find a stray dog to give the rest too. None of them would eat it

The Island Hopping tours are again good value for a days entertainment of snorkeling coral reefs & the odd wreck & swimming around lagoons with lunch included, coming in at 1200php for Tour A, 1300 for Tour B, & 1400 for Tour C

As I’ve mentioned in prior posts in El Nido you can indulge in other land based tourist attractions like Ziplining or Canopy walk tour

The hotel here was quite a nice 3-star Inn in El Nido town that I picked up for around 1750php a night so it was value for money, but like Coron town it suffered from the towns people making a racket from 6am onwards so sleep-ins were not possible. The internet & cell phone reception here was the worst of any place I visited in Palawan. I couldn’t believe how bad it was with frequent internet drop-outs & poor data streaming on smart phones

Tourist Trap rating: Quite high. This is low season & it still felt like a bit of a tourist trap so I wouldn’t want to be here in high season. You can’t even swim at the main beach at El Nido. The poor food on offer at restaurants doesn’t help

I bet there's some skinny dogs there, unless they start eating each other - if they have the energy.

I have a little friend on Palawan, I've never been. I thought it was a bit remote.

Cheap-skating doesn't pay off in Flipperland, unless you're the adventurous type.

Have a look at Landreth's El Nido thread for what it could have been like for you. I believe it's somewhere on the other channel.

Either one are "expats" or residents.

    Try again.
