  • Pheu Thai MP convicted of murder

The provincial court on Tuesday convicted Pheu Thai MP for Khon Kaen Nawat Tohcharoensuk of masterminding the murder of an assistant chief of the Khon Kaen provincial administrative organisation six years ago.

Pol Maj Gen Pairote Kujiraphan, investigative commander of Provincial Police Region 4, said at the Khon Kaen Court that the court found Nawat, 52, guilty of hiring other defendants, including two former policemen, to shoot dead Suchart Khotethum, then assistant chief of the Khon Kaen provincial administration organisation.

The victim was shot dead in front of his home in Muang district of Khon Kaen May 3, 2013, as he was about to leave for work.

The court found Nawat guilty as charged and sentenced him to death.

The court also ordered Nawat to pay 300,000 baht in compensation for the funeral costs of the dead man, said Pol Maj Gen Pairote, who had handled interrogation during the case.

The ruling was based on witnesses' testimony, forensic evidence and phone calls, he said.

Nawat requested release on bail, pending an appeal. After due consideration the court denied the request and he was ordered held in custody.

Other defendants in a separate but related case are Pol Snr Sgt Maj Veerasak Channanpol, former head of a crime suppression squad of Nong Rua police station in Khon Kaen; Pol Lt Col Somjit Kaewprom, former deputy superintendent of Nong Rua police; Prapan Sripilai; Boonchuay Jungklang; and Piyapong Meekampang.

In January 2017, the Appeal Court sentenced them to death and commuted the penalty to life imprisonment, except for Pol Lt Col Somjit, for their useful statements.

Nawat faced an arrest warrant on April 3 last year and surrendered on April 23. He had been released on bail of 2 million baht.

The Khon Kaen provincial court found that Nawat ordered the murder because the victim had an affair with his wife. On the eve of the murder, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Veerasak, Pol Lt Col Somjit and Prapan met Nawat at his home in Muang district of Khon Kaen. Then the three traveled past the victim's home and Prapan was sent to Nawat's home.

The court also found that Nawat and Pol Lt Col Somjit communicated via several phone calls before, on and after the murder date. Suchart was shot dead with several rounds of ammunition.

Nawat used to run a construction business in Nong Rua district of Khon Kaen and was an executive of the Khon Kaen provincial administrative organisation.

Nawat is also accused of physical assault on fellow Pheu Thai MP Yutthapong Charasathien at their party headquarters on Sept 10.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...cted-of-murder

I wonder if the verdict would have been different had this MP's vote been important to the government.

                  • Ex-Pheu Thai MP Nawat transferred to Bang Kwang

Pheu Thai Party MP for Khon Kaen Nawat Tohcharoensuk has been transferred to Bang Kwang Prison in Bangkok from Khon Kaen, according to the Corrections Department.

Pol Col Naras Savestanan, the department's director-general, said on Friday Nawat's transfer is in line with security management concerning an inmate who was sentenced to death and whose bail request was rejected.

On Sept 24, the Khon Kaen provincial court sentenced Nawat, the Khon Kaen Constituency 7 MP, to death for masterminding the murder of an assistant chief of the Khon Kaen provincial administration organisation in 2013.

The victim, Suchart Khotethum, was shot dead in front of his home in Khon Kaen's Muang district on May 3, 2013, as he was about to leave for work.

Nawat surrendered to police on April 23 last year before being released on bail of 2 million baht.

The Constitutional Court ruled this week to suspend him from duty, pending a ruling sought from the Election Commission as to whether Nawat had lost his MP status after he was sentenced to death and jailed.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...-to-bang-kwang

                      Court revokes Nawat's MP status

Murder convict Nawat Tohcharoensuk is no longer a Pheu Thai MP, the Constitutional Court ruled on Wednesday.

The court said his status as a parliamentarian effectively ended on Oct 16, when the court ordered him to stop carrying out the functions and responsibilities of a member of parliament.

Nawat was found guilty by Khon Kaen Criminal Court in late September of masterminding the murder of a local administrative official six years ago, and sentenced him to death.

The court also ordered him to pay 300,000 baht for the funeral costs of the murdered man.

Nawat's request for bail pending an appeal was rejected.

The judges found that Nawat ordered the murder because the victim was having an affair with his wife.

The 52-year-old former MP hired five people -- including two former policemen -- to kill Suchart Khotethum, then assistant chief of the Khon Kaen provincial administration organisation.

Suchart was shot dead in front of his home in Khon Kaen's Muang district on May 3, 2013, as he was about to leave for work.

Nawat once ran a construction business in Khon Kaen's Nong Rua district and was an executive of the provincial administrative organisation.

Decree out for Khon Kaen by-election

A royal decree for a by-election in Constituency 7 of Khon Kaen has been issued. It was published in the Royal Gazette on Sunday.

A seat for an MP representing the constituency has been left vacant after the Constitutional Court ruled on Wednesday that murder convict Nawat Tohcharoensuk of the Pheu Thai Party is no longer a parliamentarian, effective from Oct 16 when the court ordered him to stop carrying out the functions and responsibilities of a member of parliament, pending its final decision whether to strip him of MP status.

The suspension order came after the Khon Kaen Provincial Court on Sept 18 found him guilty of masterminding the murder of an assistant chief of the Khon Kaen provincial administrative organisation six years ago and sentenced him to death.

The Constitutional Court's ruling stripping Nawat of MP status led to the issue of the royal decree, which was countersigned by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Under the decree, the chairman of the Election Commission is to fix the by-election date.

Although the EC chairman has yet to officially set the date, the by-election was expected to take place on Dec 22.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...en-by-election

Appeal Court upholds death penalty for Nawat

The Appeal Court has upheld the lower court's death sentence against Nawat Tohcharoensuk, the former Pheu Thai Party MP for Khon Kaen, it was announced on Monday.

Nawat was found guilty by the Khon Kaen Criminal Court in late September last year of masterminding the murder of a local administrative official seven years ago, and sentenced to death. The court also ordered him to pay 300,000 baht for the funeral costs of the murdered man.

The judges found that Nawat ordered the murder of Suchart Khotethum, then assistant chief of the Khon Kaen provincial administration organisation, because the victim was having an affair with his wife.

The 53-year-old former MP hired five people -- including two former policemen -- to kill Suchart who was shot dead in front of his home in Khon Kaen's Muang district on May 3, 2013, as he left for work.

The case involving the five suspects eventually reached the Supreme Court which upheld the death sentence against Pol Lt Col Somjit Kaewprom, the life sentences against Veerasak Chamnanpol who served a police senior sergeant major, Prapan Sirapilai and Boonchuay, and acquitted Piyapong Meekambang.

Nawat was charged separately as the murder mastermind and the case was decided by the Appeal Court on June 23. He previously owned a construction business in Khon Kaen's Nong Rua district and was an executive of the provincial administrative organisation.

He has also been accused of ordering an assault on fellow Pheu Thai MP, Yutthapong Charassathien, in September last year.

Nawat was stripped of his MP status last November.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...alty-for-nawat
