McEnroe hopes Serena can beat 'crazy aunt' Court's record
    January 27, 2020, 10:02 PM GMT+7

Laver Cup MELBOURNE (Reuters): John McEnroe mocked Australian Margaret Court as the 'crazy aunt' of tennis on Monday and said he hoped Serena Williams could beat the 77-year-old's record of winning 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

Court has attracted heavy criticism for voicing her religious-based opposition to same-sex marriage.
The Australian Open on Monday marked the 50th anniversary of her 1970 feat of winning all four major titles in one calendar year with compatriot Rod Laver, who completed the calendar slam twice in 1962 and 1969, handing her a trophy to some applause.

McEnroe meanwhile unleashed his broadside on Eurosport television.

"There's only one thing longer than a list of Margaret Court's tennis achievements: it's her list of offensive and homophobic statements," said the seven-times Grand Slam champion.
"Serena, do me a favor, get two more Grand Slams this year and get to 25 so we can leave Margaret Court and her offensive views in the past, where they both belong. Thank you," added the American.

Williams, who won the last of her 23 majors at the Australian Open in 2017, was knocked out of this year's tournament in the third round.
Court, a Christian pastor at a Perth-based church she set up decades ago, launched a tirade against transgender athletes and called the teaching of LGBTI materials at schools the work of the "devil" during a sermon last month.

Tennis Australia has been quick to stress it does not agree with Court's views on same-sex marriage or the LGBTI community and has said the recognition is solely for her tennis achievements.
McEnroe said the person could not be separated from the achievements.

"The air quality in Melbourne is not the only nightmare that Tennis Australia is having," said the American, referring to smoke from recent bushfires. "Margaret Court is another one.
"This year marks the 50th anniversary of Margaret Court's Grand Slam and Tennis Australia is facing a dilemma; What do they do with their crazy aunt?"

Martina Navratilova, who won 18 Grand Slam single titles and is a prominent activist for gay rights, also raised a critical voice.
"It's just unfortunate because I think what Margaret Court doesn't realize is how many people she hurts with her rhetoric," said the American.

"She can believe whatever she wants but she's actually hurting people and that's not OK."

Australian Open 2020: Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe 'breached protocols' with Margaret Court protest

      Omnisport January 28, 2020

Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe took their protests against Margaret Court to a new level, but the Australian Open were not impressed.Australian Open organisers have hit back at tennis greats Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe, saying they "breached protocols" in their protest against the controversial Margaret Court.

Navratilova and McEnroe have called for the Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park to be renamed the Evonne Goolagong Arena after the indigenous Australian tennis icon.
The saga comes amid continued controversy over 11-time Australian Open winner Court's discriminatory views on race, homosexuality and the transgender community.
With McEnroe present on Tuesday, Navratilova climbed into an empty umpire's chair at the end of a legends doubles match and embarked on a speech, before the microphone was cut off midway through.

The pair then held up a banner which read 'Evonne Goolagong Arena'.

These events come a day after Navratilova had written a letter calling for the Margaret Court Arena to be renamed while, McEnroe, in an address to Eurosport, labelled Court the "crazy aunt" of tennis and branded her "offensive and homophobic".

He urged Serena Williams to pass Court's total of 24 grand slam titles so the Australian could be left in the past with "her offensive views, where they both belong."
While in the umpire's chair, Navratilova said: "I've been speaking out about an issue for a while now and John McEnroe is here to join me and push the conversation forward."
But the Australian Open, while acknowledging Navratilova and McEnroe were entitled to express their views, were not impressed with the methods used to further the cause in Tuesday's protest.

"We embrace diversity, inclusion and the right for people to have a view, as well as their right to voice that view," read the tournament's statement.
"But the Australian Open has regulations and protocols with respect to how any fan, player or guest can use our facility, the event and the global stage it provides. This is to ensure the integrity of our event.

"Two high-profile guests have breached these protocols and we are working through this with them."

Court was not given the microphone during a reduced appearance in a special ceremony at the Australian Open on Monday, where the 50th anniversary of her achieving the calendar Grand Slam was recognised.

Agreed and as such I'm sure you'd agree that sufferers shouldn't be discriminated against.
Also surely people are allowed to hold differing views and opinions on gay marriage without being vilified.

I'm not sure sufferers of homosexuality shouldn't be discriminated against, it must be shown to them that it is an abhorrence and abnormal sexual behaviour. A shame Thailand accepts these sexual deviants from the West, they should be named and shamed. I can see why Thailand are tightening up the visa rules

Margaret Court was a great athlete, and deserves to be honoured as such. Likewise Israel Folau. I don't see how that is affected by their religious belief, or their right to have one.
But of course all that matters now, to the same hypocrites that preach inclusiveness to us, is that they are bible bashing Christians, and outspoken about their belief.
It seems said inclusiveness only applies if you subscribe to the prevailing gruppenthink.

                            a) They are exemplars of religious hate who use the megaphone of sporting greatness to broadcast their divisive views.

                            b) Their religious beliefs are their own business...until they use their sporting fame to broadcast messages of hate and division.

                            c) Cynical as well as incorrect. All that matters (in a news sense) is that they have traded on sports to propagate their personal views. That, imo, is no different from the likes of Rush Limbaugh using his fame (and media megaphone) to denigrate the people (Jews, Blacks, gays, women, etc) he doesn't like.

                            d) A gross misapprehension. Folks who do not wish to be included in an inclusive society (along with Jews, Blacks, gays, women, etc) have the freedom to live as they do now and write strongly worded letters to the editor. They should not, imo, be allowed to broadcast narrow-minded messages of hate that encourage social division and that carry import only because they can kick a football or hit an ace.

One persons offensive belief is another persons religion. Fundamental democratic precepts such as freedom of speech, faith and assembly are much more important to me than the absurd beliefs that some people hold, or lifestyle choices they make.

I mean, to name similar gifted athletes such as Jonathan Davies (rugby union) and Ian Roberts (League) who came out as gay- I didn't observe any such witch hunt mentality over them, did you? That's the way it should be, and to anyone that might excoriate them for their sexuality or having the temerity to express it, I would simply say I don't see how that makes them less of a sporting champion.

The fact that Jon Davies is a HIV positive poove & Margaret Court is a prune faced bible basher gives me absolutely no inclination to be either, but I accept their choices, their right to express them- and respect them as athletes. Or should everyone go back in the closet?

...all that's fine, but I'm afraid you've missed the point: an individual's private beliefs are their own business...unless and until they use fame and opportunity to denigrate others due to perceived deviations from their own beliefs. That is the point at which they have an unfair advantage to spread hatred and division. Words matter. Were Margaret Court to bash her bible at home or within the confines of her church, I would have no issue. But she has chosen to use her fame to spew hatred far and wide. That, to me, is unacceptable and tarnishes her sport and those who play it.

I admire your evenhandedness and bland unconcern, but I wonder if you would feel the same if you were a member of the minority she despises.
