      • Korat victims' families to get B1m each

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: The families of the victims of a shooting rampage will receive 1 million baht each as public donations have soared to 58 million baht. However, the families of the gunman, the colonel and the woman he killed at a house during a dispute will not get it.

Nakhon Ratchasima governor Wichian Chantharanothai said donations to help victims of the rampage have soared to 58.5 million baht as of Thursday morning.

A provincial panel earlier provided 300,000 baht to the families of each victim as an initial aid before opening a bank account to accept public donations. As of Thursday, a total of 6.9 million baht was already given to the families of 23 dead victims (300,000 baht each) and 2.2 million to the families of 22 injured victims (100,000 baht each), leaving about 49 million baht.

The governor said the financial aid for the families of the dead victims would be increased to 1 million baht each, from 300,000 baht, as donations exceeded a target of 50 million baht.

Authorities would pay the remaining 700,000 baht each to the families on Friday.

Terminal 21 shopping centre in this northeastern province was the centre of the carnage on Saturday and Sunday, as Sgt Maj 1st Class Jakrapanth Thomma sprayed hundreds of bullets at people shopping and working there and holed up inside the mall.

The killing spree began on Saturday afternoon when he shot dead his commander Col Anantharot Krasae, Mrs Anong Mitchan, who was a real estate developer, and wounded a man identified as Witthaya Kaewprom over a real estate deal at Mrs Anong's home in a military base.

Jakrapanth moved on to Surathampithak military camp, where he killed a guard and stole high-powered weapons and ammunition from the armoury, and then fled in a stolen military truck to a Buddhist temple, where he loaded the weapons and killed nine people before driving to Terminal 21.

He took 29 lives and hurt 58 others before police commandos shot him dead on Sunday morning.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...o-get-b1m-each - https://www.nationthailand.com/news/...ernal_referral
      • Donations for Korat victims' families to close Sunday/Fund exceeds B68m, with B28m paid out

Authorities will stop receiving public donations for the families of victims of the weekend shooting rampage this Sunday, with donations already topping 68 million baht.

Provincial governor Wichian Chantharanothai on Friday handed over another 700,000 baht to each of the families of 27 of the dead victims. Total donations were at 68.27 million baht as of 8am on Friday, he said.

Earlier, a provincial panel distributed 300,000 baht to each of 26 families, a total of 7.8 million baht, and 2.2 million baht to the families of 22 of the injured, or 100,000 baht each, leaving about 58.27 million baht.

The panel agreed to increase financial aid for the families of the dead to one million baht each, from 300,000 baht, as donations exceeded the target of 50 million baht. The additional 700,000 baht was distributed on Friday.

On Thursday, the governor said no assistance would be given to the families of the gunman or the colonel and woman he killed at a house during a dispute on Feb 8, before he began his bloody rampage downtown.

Mr Wichian said donations would be closed on Feb 16, starting from 4pm.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...o-close-sunday

                  • More heroic, selfless scenes from Terminal 21, Korat

No let-up in tales of bravery

Tales of bravery and self-sacrifice continue to emerge from the Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) shopping mall where a gunman went on a mass-shooting rampage last weekend.

Molthiya Daoruang, 30, a staff member of Bangkok Bank, was able to offer shelter to 17 shoppers, first in front of the main counter, and later, after she contacted her boss to seek permission, in the bank vault.

"We were sitting facing each other as there was little space. However, the vault has a CCTV camera so we could keep an eye on activity outside and I made occasional drinking-water runs," she said. "I was just as scared as anyone else, but knew I had to help."

Ms Molthiya said she ushered the crowd into the bank about 6pm when shots started ringing out and shoppers were running around looking for somewhere to hide. She closed the shutter doors in front of the bank, which has a clear glass frontage, and doused the lights. She also instructed those inside to put their phones on silent mode, dim the reading light and stay quiet. Security officers were able to escort them out without incident about 11pm. She said she was proud to play her part in offering shelter to anxious shoppers.

A hairdresser on the first floor gave shelter to 20 shoppers, in a storage room, along the sides of the shop, and behind the counter. "The shoppers included parents and a five year-old child who thankfully managed to stay quiet during the ordeal, as crying could have attracted the gunman," said the hairstylist.

She said the owner, model Nana Ribena, called regularly and passed on what she knew to security officers, who were finally able to rescue the group about 11pm.

On Thursday, the first opening day after the tragedy, some of those who took shelter at the hairdresser's returned with gifts of fruit and sweet snacks to say thanks, she said.

Meanwhile, Asadakorn Ohmnok, a trainer at a fitness centre on the lower ground floor, about 50m from Foodland where the shooter was to take the lives of his final victims, said about 50 shoppers took shelter in the toilets and staffroom when shots started to ring out. The shoppers kept in touch via a Line group once inside while he and a security guard were able to keep an eye on Jakrapanth via a CCTV camera and report his location to police. Security forces finally escorted them out in groups of 15 at a time about 11pm.

Eight shoppers who took shelter in the refrigerated storeroom at the rear of the Foodland supermarket are hailing the brave actions of a teenager, Atiwat "Dear" Promsuk, 18, for helping save their lives.

It is helpful, especially if a breadwinner is lost but by no means can it replace a loved one.
                      • Remedial payments for Korat shooting deaths now B2m each

A provincial committee on Sunday agreed to increase the amount of assistance money for families of innocent victims killed or left with permanent disability in the Feb 8-9 shooting rampage from 1 to 2 million baht each.

Provincial governor Wichian Chantaranothai said public donations as of 4pm on Sunday totalled 82,869,229.20 baht. It was previously announced the fund would stop accepting donations from Sunday afternoon.

On Feb 14 the committee handed over an initial sum of 1 million baht each to the families of 27 people who were killed, and 100,000 baht each to 22 people who were injured and receiving treatment in hospitals.

At a meeting on Sunday, the committee decided the remaining donations will be used to provide thorough assistance to all victims.

The families of those killed and those who were injured with permanent disability will get a total of 2 million baht each.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will chair a ceremony to hand over the additional assistance to the families on Wednesday, Mr Wichian said.

The rampage on Feb 8-9 left 30 people dead, including the gunman, and 58 injured.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...s-now-b2m-each
