  • DuoLingo Learning a Language Online

I had a bit of time on my hands over the last two months, but needed to stay near the house, so started learning the Gaelic language online using the Duolingo site.

Why not Thai? They don't have it for some reason.

About thirty minutes to an hour a day is enough before you get burned out.

Learning is done by walking down a tree structure, new words are introduced at the basic level of a topic and you have to translate from engish to gaelic or vice versa, or type what you hear, to advance.

You need to pass basic levels on topics at the same tree level before you can move on to the next group. Grammatical concepts are introduced in the same way. There's tons of repetition.

For learning Gaelic a major plus point is that nearly all words have an audio. Important as the pronunciation is very different from english. Consonant pronunciation changes depending on the class of the nearest vowel.

There's also lots of unwritten vowels, Falbh --Falav (english go)
And unwritten consonants, Ceart --Cearst (english correct)

Kind of similar to Thais speaking english. School --Sakool.

Plus written but silent vowels which are there like tone marks to change the sound of the consonant.

The grammar is a buzz as the word order is primarily Verb-Subject-Object.

    Prepositional pronouns rule.

    Agam (at me)
    Orm (on me)
    Leam (with me)

I'm kind of in a rut at the moment. Halfway through and trying to remember a vocabulary of around a thousand words. I've decided to try and memorize the words that have been introduced before heading off into the more difficult final levels. The site allows you to practice topics you've already passed so I'll be doing that for a while.

Once I finish the course I suspect that I'll still only be at a kind of advanced beginner's level.

I'd recommend Duolingo to anyone, either to learn a language or just to exercise the brain.
I visited TC a few times as a guest but had to stop. It is a sickening place. - Aging One
