Had a look at the Ford,Toyota, Chevy pick up trucks the other day and the series 3 BMW.
was tempted by the BMW but really wasn't what I needed, will leave the BMW for the wife.
i set out to buy a top model Chevy or Ford and ended up with another Toyota. ordered the 2014 TRD pickup for 940,000 white auto 4 door.
The new model TRD comes with the all options of the top line 4+4 except 2+4 and only the 2.5 litre as no 3 ltr in the TRD line up, forget about what the Toyota web site says as it only has last year model on it, new model goes in product this month with delivery date of May.
Ford I would have gone for top model wild track but they were unable to give a delivery date and no sat nav and shitty interior. On the plus side they are a big roomy pickup with nice looks.
chevy had the 200 hp engine and sat nav but didn't like the look and cheap interior.
after looking at all three pickups the Toyota was a far better built vehicle better interior with all the options only down side was the 2.5 144hp engine. But after burning a million baht in a race truck I was just after a every day driver and won't be modifying this one the than covering the seats and tint on windows.

Had a Ford truck that I was extremely happy with. Although a ford in Thailand does not hold it's value in a Thai's eyes like a Toyota or Isuzu would.

A moto -sie is a lot more convenient to have than a vehicle in Thailand. Especially for parking and getting around in a traffic stoppage.

Its a "newer" forum and has spurts of growth and then growing pains.

I certainly would not ride a motorbike in Thailand, nor would I get on one of those nutty bus death-traps. I always drive, take a taxi or ride the BTS or train. I enjoy a tuktuk and a song taew once in awhile too.

Although I'm retired, I do travel quite a bit in country so I bought and old Mitsubishi SUV a couple of years ago.
It's sluggish but comfortable, a bit like me. Diesel auto but no turbo and only 2.5l engine. Can get the MTB in the back so all is good.
If it wasn't for the flooding a few years back I would have bought a Jazz.

I live in the sticks so the lack of manouverability isn't a problem here, only when I go to tourist places.

outside of bangkok, a pick up is the most useful and practical form of transport.

they are tough, low on hi-tech, and can take a lot of punishment, which is what they will get on thailands poorly maintained roads and tracks.
their suspension and chassis set up will encourage you to drive slower, always a good thing here.

should they break down, a situation which will probably not occur if you buy a toyota, they can be repaired anywhere and parts are easy to obtain, unless its a ford, in which case be prepared to wait a couple of months each time it breaks down.

if you just need a car to tootle around town, then my advice would be to get the cheapest base model of a jazz or whatever small car toyota or mitsubishi are bringing out now. the cheaper it is, the less you will care and worry about it should it get scratched or dented.

cars should be treated as white goods like a washing machine or fridge, as slaves to be beaten and abused, as something that has no emotional hold over you, to be of service until old and decrepit, then discarded like a cigarette butt and replaced with a new model.

dressed up special models, sportified pick ups (surely the automotive equivalent of the botoxed granny), and ridiculously priced imports, are for shiny toothed americans, london wide boys and oily italians to park outside their struggling pattaya pizza emporiums and should be avoided like the plague by those in possession of dignity, common sense and class.

Sadly, now that I am back stateside, I think that Thailand's roads are maintained better than here. There are loads of potholes, bumps, and cracked pavement here. Maybe in the villages in Issan are a mess, but not the highways. One would think that America would be head and shoulders of above Thailand when it comes to road conditions, but it just ain't so. The roads are here!!
