  • How did you end up living in Thailand?

For me, it was a girl I met when I was traveling Thailand, Cambo and Laos. I fell in love with the place.

Was working in the Middle East and was invited to come to Phuket with some friends that were living there, and never went home, started in Phuket then moved to Bangkok, then to Khon Kaen, moved out to the village in Nongbualamphu now back in Khon Kaen.

When I am in bed of a night and ms Bonglek is bending my ear about some trifling matter and generaly being a bore, I sometimes spontaniously mutter.

" What am I doing here in Thailand "

I then quickly pull her legs apart and have a close look at the ham sandwhich before answering

        " Oh yes ..............now I remember ! "

Always makes her laugh provided I only resort to it twice a year. Nice get out of jail card that one.

Just over 5 years ago, I stopped to visit friends and never got to where I was originally headed.

Love sunshine, love spicy food, love value for money, love slim brunettes, love variety.

Went there for a three month holiday many winters ago, extended it for a year, worked there for several years, knocked that on the head because I didn't want to abandon the west, and IMO Thailand is far more enjoyable for short visits whilst in the region.

I first visited Thailand in 1977 while on an around-the-world trip. Came back many times after that; mostly to dive but I also did a fair bit of touring.

I lived on Saipan in the Mariana Islands from 1979 until I retired in 2005. It was pretty easy to get from Saipan to Thailand.

When I retired I was living with a Thai woman who was working in the hotel industry. She was ready to go back home. So, we ended up in Korat. She's now an attorney and I'm a misanthropic loner.

The photo is me on Koh Samui in 1977; long before it got nuts.

Graduated in 2008 with a liberal arts degree in a recession. Had a sense of Wanderlust so put some clothes in a bag, booked a cheap flight and left with 500USD for a job I would either love or hate. 11 years later, still working around the world and enjoying it- lived in Thailand for 8 years and it will always be "home".

I had dreams of saving lives with the English language. I studied at one of the great UC's in my home country with the aspirations of one day achieving my ultimate goal....that is, to teach EngRish in Thigh-Land. Seriously, ever since I was a little boy all I could dream about was getting people to understand the difference between the sounds of R, L and W.

                      "Weauwy?" you ask, yes! Weally.

Nah, I chose happiness over my career. DUMB! Now I teach English I'm an idiot.

Seriously though, I came back with the woman I fell in love with which happens to be Thai. I met her while she was in college NOT A BAR! Although, for our first date I did get her super drunk like any creep and take advantage of her. But hold on people! before you judge, she would tell you she took advantage of me. I paid for two drinks that night!!!!!

Now I rely on her super rich family to pay for all my Hong Thong and medical bills. Life is great!

First overseas appointment as I was working with international students as part of my job at a Sydney uni, made many friends and a great job was offered through the uni grapevine, I thought 'Why not'?

Fast forward decades later moved on from Thailand but never moved back to Oz, much to the despair of those close to me.

Was invited to come to Thailand by the Thai Government based upon a technical transfer program they had with the Australian Government.

They paid for my airfare and accommodation and to be honest I done what I had to do and got out of the place as I hated Bangkok.

                            That was 35 years ago.

Job sent me here. Job kept me here for a few years. I left back to states and shortly after my return realized I liked the place and moved back.
