  • Suggestions for regional travel please

I am looking for some suggestions for regional travel. I have been all over Thailand, between Vientiane, Phnom Penh, and Singapore. I am looking for specific, really neat, off the beaten path travel locations. I am really, really board with Thailand. Everything seems to look just alike here.

Hmm . . . regional usually mean beaches.

Have you thought of Mount Kinabalu - not a difficult climb, take two or three days - stay at lovely retreats in the cool climate.

Staying in Borneo, though in the other Malaysian state of Sarawak - how about staying in Permai, tree-houses in the forest an then trek to the Iban (native Borneans) villages? Not as touristy as you may think.

Angkor Wat? A bit of cultcha!

    More?

Thanks for the suggestions PH, I will do some further research.

Definitely not beaches. If I see another beach with vendors and massage girls trying to push their products and services, you will read about me in the Pattaya news taking a plunge off the top floor of the Hard Rock Hotel on Beach Road. I am looking for something unique.

More? More is always better than less!

Check out Saigon. It still has that 1960's nostalgic feel about it.

How about Burma? Is it worth the headache involved in getting a visa? I hear its pretty tough.

This might help https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/burma although they mean well it is not always the case you should avoid the areas they advise you to. For example the British government advocates avoiding Mindanao in The Philippines but other sources say it is OK so long as you avoid certain areas and foreigners do visit without ado. In all fairness a government office can only generalize, a more useful source (at least it was) are the Lonely Planet guide books as they are written by people with considerable experience of living there. Hope this is of use.

Ok, keeping in tune with the highlands theme . . .

Vietnam has some glorious mountain-escapes, though travel could be a bit difficult - Hoi An

On a more 'civilised' note, why not try the Malaysian Hghlands; Genting (not really that brilliant unless you like gambling and have kids along for the fun fair) and/or Cameron Highlands. rent a car in KL and just drive - excellent road system and accommodation aplenty.

We spent some very nice days at the Taman Negara in Pahang state a few months ago. The national park is quite splendid -- you can use the longest canopy walk and trek along the river until you find one of many swimming areas - very few tourists, if any.

One of our best vacations for a long time. If you'd like some pics let me know

I would suggest Sapa, Vietnam. From Sapa you can visit a few different hilltribes and even spend a nigh or two with them. You can rent a motodop and get them to take you on the most magnificent ride I've ever been on through the mountains to see the highest mountain in Vietnam (Fansipan at 3,143 m). I should do a picture thread of my time at Sapa. You can take an overnight train from Hanoi. Hanoi in itself is worth a visit. You can see some puppet theater and stay in the old quarters. From Hanoi you can also take a junk cruise overnight or two along Halong Bay. I did Vietnam in a month and loved it.

From what I've read, it's very expensive and accomo might be difficult to find due to Burma being behind the curve in the tourists wanting to visit.

Vientiane to Wangvien, on to Luang Prabang, from there by boat up the Mekhong to the Thai border.
                          A guaranteed adventure.
