  • Traffic accidents in Thailand - the larger vehicle is always as fault

I always keep hearing that no matter what, the larger vehicle is always at fault in Thailand when there is a crash. Is it really the traditional wisdom in Thailand that when two vehicles of different sizes crash, the larger vehicle is always as fault. Trucks are larger than bikes. Is it really a standard police practice here or just Thailand urban legend? If that is true why is that? Why not just find at fault the diver that caused the accident?

believe it or not Thailand does actually have a Traffic Code .

Quite similar to western norms , give way to the right etc , left for our American friends before someone starts .

In days passed not so much the size of the vehicle as too the size of the wallet .

Very early days now BUT IF the new overlords succed in turning around the patronage system we my yet see justice as we are used to in the west .

IMO, the new overlords of Thailand are going to make it much worse in all areas.

I believe that would depend on one's locale, where the overlords are extremely nominal and presence is nil.

You can create and enforce all the bladdy vehicular laws and regulations that you wish - not going to change the drivers' habit and character....

Will take time but Thais will learn if laws are consistently enforced. I remember back in the 60s when mandatory seat belts became law in the US. Not me. No way I'm gonna wear some girlie seat belt. I'm macho man. After the BiB gave me a few tickets, suddenly became a habit. I got conditioned. Same as I did with mandatory motorsi helmet law. Couple tickets and now won't go without one.

Recently, the local BiB started giving out tickets for passengers not buckling up. The locals were aghast. Figured was just another BiB scam. Word got though the Isaan grapevine and guess what? All passengers are buckling up.

Won't see Thais observe all the traffic laws in my lifetime but with consistent enforcement, over time, they will.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

I agree -- the laws don't require changing, they require enforcement. Fix the police here, and you've fixed nearly everything else. Thais will follow rules if there are serious punishments that accompany noncompliance. The problem is nobody, including police, respects anything -- especially laws. (maybe money)
