Every harvesting season my neighbours come strip my 'maak' palms (Areca catechu) and leave with a year's supply. In return they come help me a few times with some garden chores...

Have look at the Taiwan version of consuming and selling betel nuts, quite different....

There are 2 versions:
Maak haing - the dried, sliced nuts which are hard and chewed sometimes for hours, mostly by old women and tribal folks, also used in ceremonies as gifts for dead relatives.
Maak dip - the 'fresh', ripe nut, which is soft and juicy. Gives a (very)short high, compared by chewers to coffee or cocaine.Originally posted by Ergenburgensmurgen;n186588
