How to keep busy in Korat.

The two water parks, the zoo, the Mall, the farang foodie places, the nice Thai restaurants as well as the hole in the wall tasty Thai places, and Save One market. It is a short drive to Khao Yaa, Khin Khaen, Bangkok and the rest of Isaan. There is a great Italian restaurant in Khao Yai called Vino.
The best thing about Korat is that the traffic is not that bad and the Thai people are nicer and many of them speak Englsih well - better than BKK, Pattaya and Phuket. I think they are nicer because it is not a tourist area and their English is better because there used to be the US military base there. I have met many older Thais that worked at the base, took English classes there, and went to church that was on the base. There are several Thai women that married US soldiers back in the late 60's early 70's that are still with them, used to live in America and now have moved back and retired in Korat with their husbands

This resturant well worth a couple visits. Food is great and Andy is a great guy.

Phi mai is worth a day trip. About an hour north of Korat.

Maimeetang's suggestion to spend a couple days in Khao Yai is a good one. All sorts of resorts varying in price. Go during the week to avoid the Bangkok weekend tourists. Dec/Jan take a light jacket.

If you have access to a car just head out for a drive to nowhere. Amazing what you run across near the gateway to Isaan.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

She has a Hoda shadow that I could use, or we could. Would like to do stuff with the In-laws, but not sure what. I do not want to sit for a couple of weeks doing nothing, no internet even. I was going to suggest that we all go someplace for a short holiday. Not sure if the in-laws would go for that? Korat and its hinterland as I remember it is mostly rice cultivation. When I ask what the Mrs would like to do she is not very "positive about Korat". or BK or anyplace other than the ocean. Ah well I intend to have a good time. The last time I visited I had a car, tried that driving thing, was gone 6 hours. One paddy field tended to look like another ,to this day I have no idea where I was.

It does sound like it has a kind of widespread appeal ideally suited to someone prepared to get out and look around. As opposed to those who sit around waiting for life to happen.
Hope you enjoy your visit. I think the presence of extended Thai family would be my motivation to get out and explore.

I suggest to do a pictorial review of the local massage parlours, isn't Korat famous for them?Originally posted by Ergenburgensmurgen;n186588
What are you talking about, I don't post on Teakdoor.

Talking about the mall I saw something I had never seen before. In the car park, when all the stall are full you park across the line of cars. Leave the handbrake off so if someone wants to pull out before you they simply roll the car forward or back. Never seen that before seemed to work fine. Sure I will find stuff, will post something.

The next surprise was that the welcome pack included soap and condoms, about 22 years ago, Now I recognizes the difference between a regular hotel and a ST hotel, but in those days I was as green as cucumber.

... and then the big surprise when the check-out call came 3 hours later, and realising the room wasn't such a bargain after all.
Happened to me, too.Originally posted by Ergenburgensmurgen;n186588
