      Not a few decades -
Quite a few years ago, succeeded by structures in Shanghai, KL, Taipei, Shanghai [again] and lastly Dubai.

      A 10-12 year span.

It's not me that doesn't have facts correct. You cvnts were talking like Canada was never in the game when it clearly was. Idiots I tell you.... Idiots

Prior to the twin towers the site was race course, on it they had the best restaurant in KL, I spent many hours there drinking and eating with friends and my then Mianoi (Malaysian), so I was less than impressed when I saw the initial plans for the twin towers in a hotel in Shahalam where I lived back then, now eating and drinking as well as thoughts of Mianois are well gone, now its basic food and school fees that clog up my dreams.
As well as times and yachts, and girls past, all I have now is photo's.

Ego a big factor. Nations and leaders participating in long dick contests.
I was living in KL during construction of the KL Tower. Aside from acting as a telecom tower it's pretty much an overpriced useless edifice. Locals referred to it as "Mahathir's final erection".
The tower was followed by the Petronas Twin Towers. Another example of my dick is bigger than yours. Other players in the long dick contest objected claiming Malaysia was cheating by including the antenna on top to determine the height of the building.

Just one example of ego driven construction projects. Plenty more to be sure.

A quick look at occupancy rates for all will quickly determine the ego vs need motive.

We must have been there around the same period Norts, can you remember the name off the restaurant that was on the site? I have tried but my mind doesn't work and (memory )doesn't work that well now. I do remember it was one of the few mixed Malaysian and westerner restaurant's around, not exclusively Bumi and not toffee nosed westerners either, I was s quite the lad in those days, drove a Triumph TR6 and had a pretty Malaysian bird.
Aaaah those were the days sobsob

I was living in the Pacific Regency Hotel Suites at the time. Ate there a lot on top floor. Good mix of local and western food.

Can't recall the name of the restaurant on the building site either. Mostly ate at the many, at the time, cheap but great restaurants on Jalan Alor. Understand all gentrified now and not cheap.

Night life was sparse but available if one knew where to go. Spent most of my evenings at a pub called the Beetlenut and another called Blue Suede Shoes. Sunday afternoons spent at a nearby disco where all the Flip maids went after church. All gone now after the total remake of the city center.

it was an old colonial house Norts, but still don't remember the name, any way I was out in Shaalam.
In those days it was a bit of a trek to town and later on it was convenient for the race track, on which I would spend most the weekend, as well, since Smeg is here, I will mention my yacht at klang, a Ross 830, not as good as the one I had at home (Ross 40 ft) but that was too deep draught for the waters around Klang (that was an offshore yacht any way) so the little Ross was a good performer.
As was my TR and my little Bumi princess.
I had it all, but I was restless and I didn't relish subscribing to the teachings of Dr M and his acolyte's, then made the move to Thailand.

Why would you have had to subscribe to the mad doctor's teachings? There was no compulsion to do so, as little as there was under Pak La or now.

why would I subscribe to Dr Ms,? not just Drm although his hypocrisy was galling, the whole Malaysian brainwashed mentality was depressing, the way they treated Chinese, and Indians citizens of their own country and anyone that was non Bumi including indos and other foreigners got on my tits not to mention the news papers and other media. I remember well, in the car park a Driver reversed into my car in full view of the staff, the police came and said that I was guilty, because he was Malaysian and I wasn't. I just got tired of that **** and moved.

It's not like that anymore as the Chinese and Indians not only control the economy but also the judiciary - can't get away with that chi! anymore . . . and Malays are becoming more educated and worldly.

True, there is still the state-sponsored preference given to Bumis, which fewer and fewer are taking up . . . big up to the mad doctor's 'Second Malay Dilemma'.

It's changed a lot, in some ways more conservative, in others more liberal. You should give it another go
