The white temple just south of CR, from there on to the waterfall in the national park - makes a nice 1-day outing from CR.

"Wat Rong Khun, more well-known among foreigners as the White Temple, is a contemporary unconventional Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. It was designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat in 1997."

Wat Rong Khun was severely damaged when it was 'hit' by the heavy earthquake earlier this year. There were rumours that it was unrepairable and would be closed but I believe it's still open for public, only a few areas are off-limit. But if it's not enough CR temple, you can always visit the Black House/Temple. Same strange/interesting....

Later more. Qualifying F1 starts in a few minutes...

Wat Pan Tao | Old teak temple. Small but very ornamental. Next to Wat Chedi Luang.
Wat Chiang Man | The oldest temple of CM set in a beautiful garden.
Wat Lok Molee | Old temple with nice entrance and illuminated at night.
Wat Sri Suphan | Just outside the walled city, off Wualai (silver) street and clad in many beautiful silver ornaments.
Wat Phra Singh | Situated in the heart of the city. Many Lanna art. Can be busy at times.
Wat Phra That Doi KhamWat Bupparam | If you want to see some Shan and Burmese influences.
Wat UmongWat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Thad Doi Suthep, both impressive, if not visited do so but beware, very busy, too touristy, especially at weekends.

Map of all temples in and around CM: Here

More to come (no, no more temples )

Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden well worth a visit in CM.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

Then there is Chiang Mai beach, on the riverbanks west out of the city.
On the main road going there, still in the city, is a food stall with a few tables which opens from 5pm onwards and sells grilled dog meat. It's the specially bred, slightly sweet tasting variety.

QSG is nice but not much flowering now. Some nice rare plants for sale in their little shop. Another interesting green place is Dokmai botanical garden, just SW of the city.

Along the road to Samoeng (starting at Mae Rim side) there's a lot of things to see/do. Waterfalls, X-Centre (off-road/outdoor activities), a snake and an orchid farm, an elephant camp (very touristy and better/more natural camps near Mae Taeng and Chiang Dao), a few good restaurants and coffee shops and halfway Samoeng there's an excellent viewpoint to count the layers of hills.

Eat an ice cream at the small market upstairs and return the other way to CM. Enjoy the hairpins. Simple day out if you include a visit at one of the attractions.

CR was a bust for me. I was down with the the worst case of food poisoning I have ever had. The family enjoyed it, but I was hotel bound for a majority of the trip.
