I should perhaps add that the festival takes place at the Thailand cultural Centre.

On Saturday 13th I would expect to see Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in the Royal box.

Ar you planning on attending this function T? Have you in the past and is it worth 55000 baht for the class seats?

        Performances vary.

The seats behind and around the Royal Box cost ThB 2,500 so for the additional ThB 3,000 you get absolutely nothing. I am assuming that the Royal Box is in the prime location.

The thing I have learned to look out for is ballet performances with no orchestra. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think anyone would perform ballet to a CD and these performances are usually dismal.

One evening we have Mahler's 5th conducted by Zubin Mehta. This will, without doubt, be world class...if you're into Mahler's 5th which I'm not.

I'll have time to put the rest of the festival up over the weekend.

On September 15th (Next Monday) we are being treated to Puccini's La Boheme.

Its plot centres around a community of artists in Paris, focusing on the romantic relationship between poet Rodolfo and Mimi, a seamstress. Like the relationship of Rodolfo's roommate Marcello and the beautiful Musetta (a singer), Mimi and Rodolfo's love is not without conflict. At the end of the opera, however, they are united tragically as Mimi returns to the garret and dies there, surrounded by her friends.

This production is by the same company that is performing Don Giovanni on Saturday so I will post here on Sunday to let people know what that performance is like. I could name a few Puccini operas that I prefer to La Boheme which is why I'm going to Don Giovanni instead.

          La Boheme details:

          Bht 5,500/4,500/3,500/2,500/1,500
          Duration:Act I & II: 60 mins
          Intermission 20 mins
          Act III: 26 mins
          Intermission : 20 mins
          Act IV: 30 mins

            Don Giovanni

Last night's performance was, as the art world says, "conceptual"; you had to already have an understanding of Don Giovanni in order to appreciate this production. The scenery was spartan, comprising a few trellis tables some bronze statues. The production was, however, solid, but not for those unfamiliar with the opera itself, especially since it was sung in Italian with English surtitles.

If, as I expect, La Boheme is given the same treatment, then there is little point attending the performance if you don't already know what La Boheme is about.

The lion's share of this event's money went on the orchestra. It was superb and the conductor must have worked hard to create that familiar Mozart sound. It was worth closing your eyes and just listening to the music at times, well unless you're into trellis tables.

This performance was the opening event of the festival and, much to my surprise, the patron, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was not present.

              Nova Amadeus Orchestra

              Tuesday 16th September 7.30pm

A concert of classical music by Nova Amadeus Orchestra

              1st part2nd partBht 3,000/2,500/2,000/1,500/800

Duration: Part I: 43 mins, Part II: 35 mins
              Intermission: 20 mins

I've never heard of this orchestra before but the programme is superb. The Cavalleria Rusticana many will recognise as the music that plays at the close of Godfather III when Michael's daughter, Mary, is killed up to the point when we see Michael collapse in his chair.

                    There's still the Sunday performance.

Give them a call, there might even be an opening for a clown.
