  • Problems with Thailand house construction crew

I am having some problems with the construction crew that is building my house in Thailand. They show up around 9 and tend to want to leave by 1 or 2 saying it is too hot tow work. With an hour lunch and breaks they are lucky to get 4 or 5 hours of real constitutions time it. I asked them to come at 6am or 7am and they always agree to do so, bu the next day show up at 9am.

Has any one else had problems like this and if so, how did you fix the problem?

I take it there just a crew of locals and not a registered company.?

I have encountered same problems over the years with locals, they always have something else to do, attending parties funerals, the list is long.

Simple to resolve these working problems.
Find a crew and foreman that will abide by your standards - there are plenty around.

Lay down the law as to how things should be conducted - follow through.
If they don't care for such things - find someone else.

Yep. Problematic if family members part of the crew however.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

If you judge them by work habits, doubt you'll ever be happy. Judge 'em by results- and pay them by work completed, not time on the job.

Probably only a fractionally greater chance of happiness in that case but a good idea nevertheless. If it's just a bunch of off-duty farmers throwing concrete around, then your choices may be limited to accepting slow and shoddy work, murdering someone or having a stroke.

You'd be surprised as to the number of contractors, and their crews, that are FT builders and whatnot - and that's all they do.

A good arse kicking needed, just do not show up with wages one week and say '' you work when it suits you I will pay you when you have reached the target I have set in my mind, end of story.

Don't hang around while they're working.
Hire a general contractor for a reasonable sum (that you've shopped around for) and leave the headaches to him. You didn't come live here to sweat the small stuff. Build in a payment structure such that the GC doesn't get paid until milestones are met.

There's no reason for you to talk to the workers -- it's no win. You'll either break-even or make them pissed off. They can screw you in ways you can't imagine. If you're buying them booze and lunch, they don't think you're a nice guy, they think you're an easy fool. They don't respect weakness. Just don't get involved.

If you're 85% happy at the end, be satisfied. Talk softly to the GC and he'll get the problems fixed.

The loud and angry approach here gets you nowhere. Thai males need to be continually stroked, don't take criticism well, and are very sensitive -- the sooner you realize this the better off you'll be.

                      They're just taking advantage.
Start at 7, lunchbreak when it's "too hot" from 12 - 2, and back on the job. Anytime after 5 it's whisky-o'clock with a few snacks, provided by me - this should make it worthwhile for them to work the afternoon.

If I may ask, where did you get these workers? It's important that you set standards to your workers if they will not abide then it's just right to hire set of workers who will submit to your instructions. It's hard to give tasks to people who are not respectful of their boss.
