There are some really great things about this country. Having experienced most of them, I shall probably continue the journey I started in late 2008. Just after the Yellow shirts occupied the airport, I passed through en route to New Zealand. I'm still here.

Probably get to the land of the long white cloud, about the same time qualify for my UK state pension.

Roads are in much better shape than ever before.

      Two examples:

      1. Route 24 from Korat into the deepest darkest heart of Issan is almost a two-lane divided highway now so your aren't stuck behind cane trucks and risking life and limb passing.

      2. Route 1, the so-called "Asia Highway" is virtually pot-hole free from Bangkok to Lampang and onwards. Only exception is the bypass around Nakon Sawan going north. That's still in rough shape but it's a short distance until you hook up with Hwy 1 again.
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

Has it been done to ensure Bangkok continues to get a willing workforce, or to send all the Isaan mattress warriors home for Songkran?

Well, as mentioned, Hwy 1 up through KP, Tak etc is in great shape now so it's not just Issan that's benefiting.

I lived in Hanoi for a while and I remember returning to Thailand and thinking how great the roads were. Of course, that was 20 years ago.

Go to the Philippines for a break. If you come back without having been at least robbed you will have had a memorable experience and be content to be back in boring Thailand where nothing happens unless you want it to.

You can spend a pleasant holiday looking over your shoulder half the time and the other half fending off opportunist pick pockets of all ages.

If you are in the occasional habit of going out and getting blind drunk make sure you wear a condom. That way when you wake up in a gutter stripped of all your possessions you won't be completely naked.

Make that a second hand condom to be on the safe side.

That is my take on the Philippines too, but lots of fun in between watching your back. A lot less stress in LOS though.

Japan is the best place in Asia for a break from Thailand. Many cheap flights there these days.

Regularly changing the scenery is a hobby for many. It's called travel.

I'm sure I'd have lost my mind if I'd barely left thailand after I first arrived there fifteen years ago. I've spent around 1/3 of my time there since, which is ample.

Seems to me the happiest westerners are those that spend only part of the year there, although once retired I may feel differently. The rest of the world is a very good antidote for now.

Never been, so I doubt it would be boring to me. I would love to see it, but still enjoy traveling in SEA. Woud like to see the changes in Vietnam and Cambodia in the last 20 years.

We are off to Rome, Florence and Venice next. The only place in Asia i'd want to go to again is Japan, civilized compared to Thailand, Thais love it cos they don't need a visa. Philippines is probably the last place i'd go again, attempted mugging at 8.30 on a Sunday morning in Manila and the nightlife in Angeles was rubbish as well and that was in '97.

The food is quite horrible but if you are into LMBM's, go for it!

Was LBFM's when I was there.

Amazing what 30 years of development and infrastructure
improvement can change. I probably wouldn't recognize the place in the unlikely event I could convince wifey I absolutely had to go there on my next visa run and it would take a week to process.
