Personally, everything changed when my daughter was born.
I came here as a 42-year-old retiree with my Thai wife of 5 years. It was good then, that was 9 years ago. It's tiresome now. I don't have a single Thai person I would consider a friend, aside from my wife.

I come from a good background. Cheating, thieving, and cutting corners and the simple thrill of "getting over on somebody" doesn't appeal to me.

Integrity, pride in one's work, honesty and compassion are important to me.

    Oil and water? Indeed.

Yes, I've created a bubble, as most farangs have -- for the same reason. I can read and write Thai at a basic level. I can communicate with relative ease. I just don't like their style -- even the nice ones. I don't live in Bangkok and the lifestyle and attitudes of hayseed morons is starting to rankle me bigtime. Maybe I'm getting old.

Having said that, I don't like the western style much either. Nanny-state nickel and dime society, reaching into your pocket a dozen times a day to pay some horseshit penalty for living in "something marginally better than Thailand." Pay for parking, pay for incoming calls, pay 20x for garbage, pay 100x for childcare. The consumer society enslaves you. Live too close to the stadium and you pay for the millionaire primadonnas to entertain others. Fuks that.

I don't think of myself as being "from" anywhere, so I don't much care where I end up. It's a hard call. I will reevaluate this year. The Thai experience has run its course. My wife wanted to move back to the States 5 years ago.
    Pretty early retirement. good job

Yep I hear ya Texas. I've been here 10 years each year my western conditioning becomes ever more ambivalent.
I have to adjust my focus to enjoy the splendor of nature and try to emphasize with how the Thai are products of the sad education system and the current technology rocket ride human society as a whole is digesting.
My solution has been to step back and rebel by riding the bicycle.

Standard fare for American servicemen. Serve 20 years, you can retire with half your pay. Earn 2.5 percent for every year you serve beyond 20. In this case though, not notable, rather Thailand has changed. They protect their shitty world by taxing anything worthwhile with import duties of 100s of percents. A lawn mower that costs $1000 in Home Depot would cost 5x that here. Fat smug government officials sit idly by and rake in the largess. Just milk the system -- beats working. It's a metaphor for the whole ****ing country. Its the reason they've been a "developing" country for 200 years. If they exist in another 200, they'll still be developing.

They're lazy indolent fukkers always looking for ways to cut corners or rip off the farang (or any other customer when its expedient). If I'm paying, the price is generally 30-40 percent higher than the price they give my wife. Don't suggest I'm exaggerating, I've been here nearly 10 ****ing years.

Gillette shaving creak is 320 baht at Foodland. That is a bit pricey for shaving cream being it would only be a tenth of that price back home. I am going to grow a beard to my belly button.

Moaning fookers are you all Brits? I am not bored of Thailand, even tho am now nearly disabled and can only walk with assistance I went to central yesterday with my youngest and the totty is a sight for my sore eyes.
I could just look at it for hours, and then when we went home. we got a Tuktuk outside. but not a ordinary tukk tuk, It was blinged up with chrome and a nice vinyl seat with headroom for 2 mt tall person and not a Somchai, but a pleasant lady, helped me out the tuktuk, 80 bt.

My daughter was happy, and I brought a nice ready made meal at tops and nice bread at the Japanese bread shop. Not bored at all, and when I got home my old lady jumped my bones , so all is well in plonkerland.

A good choice for a change, albeit a little late to see the tulip gardens. The wife loves it there as well, even enjoyed dining on a canal cruise.

                  Enjoy the trip....

Who would ever want to contend between you and a Queenwilly award? Winner....
Have you finished your daily quota of 100% Lao Khao already?

                      P.S.

Shouldn't that read ''here in our very midst'' or do you think that you are posting from the ''mists'' of Scotland?

Don't lie Pete. Even 2 years ago that happening was not happening.

Are you still in Udon, or are the rumors of a move to Chiang Mai true?

                            Hope you are happy anyway.

I think it's a mixture of boredom and frustration, especially for retirees. Most people thrive on established routine with a few boundaries. Others like constant change to stimulate their focus.
Me I dislike over regulated society. You can stick Bangkok up your bottom. Where Bangkok goes, the rest will follow eventually, but those boundaries will be moved to suit local needs.

This creates the current adversarial system where the law takes precedent, but is applied according to local custom, instead of uniformly.

The lawless fringes were the best bits. Instead of forcing you to adapt to new rules, you adapted to those you like. A bit like the rural French sticking two fingers up to a blanket ban on smoking in public.

A friend just opened a new bar. High quality materials and all fitted out by craftsmen. I was enjoying the atmosphere until a group of families with children arrived.

                            Bye bye.

Boredom has little to do with locale and associated environment/surroundings, but more the individual.

                                Got that right.

I can honestly say that I have never been bored here in Thailand.

To the Western mind, the extremes are so stark, it's a 24/7: "Jesus! Did you see that?" and "What are those good smells coming out of the kitchen?" etc.
