watch this mini series by the BBC - I wish it had been made before I went there - one of the most stunning experiences I've ever had.

Many good books on the subject. by some accounts, Angkhor was the worlds first city of a million people. The surviving stuff (made of stone) was just for the rulers vanity.

I visited in 2003 or 2004, went overland from Bangkok. The traveling was as interesting as the temples. I've read they've finally stopped people from climbing up the ruins at Angkor. I thought it strange that they allowed it when I was there.

The hoards of tourists that flock to Angkor overwhelm the place these days so it's no wonder authorities stopped folks from climbing on the temples.

Same as Stonehenge in the Wiltshire region of England. You're no longer able to go up and touch the stones.
            Too many tourists...
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

That's be when Thai culture ruled Cambodia if memory serves.

I went in about 1993-4 and very few tourists at that time or staying in town. Glad I went when I did.

Those long ago folks who used to live in Ayutthya surely didn't forget that slice of history.

There's a nice Museum in the town of Don Chedi commemorating King Nasuran's defeat of those nasty Burmese back in 1593:

"Prince Damrong Rajanubhab in 1913 discovered the remains of a large chedi within the district. He identified it as the one built by King Naresuan in 1593 after his win against the Burmese. The chedi was reconstructed in 1952. In 1959 a statue of the king on his war elephant cast by Silpa Bhirasri was added."

⛄️ Ankor is a great place to visit 🌨
Temple stairs are for midgets, 🎃 narrow and steep ❄️ and many a fallen ☃ tourist has sprained their ankles 🐹 its dangerous climbing those ancient staircases 🏃🏾

Well worth going through. Probably the most worthwhile historical site that I have ever seen.

Gotta agree with Chesty, but it's 15 years ago I visited.
Hired a 'tourguide', i.e. guy with a tricycle to see the less visited sights - the area is huge and plenty of quiet worthwhile spots if you make the effort.

Early 90s. Siam Riep was tiny and undeveloped with no foreign restaurants. We had to go by boat, which was a pleasure.
