Well Mid ouch may be an understatement. 400 killed in a week? It would
be a political scandal in a country twice it's size. Democratic, Appointed,or junta all seemed non plused at the idea that driving habits need to be inforced year round

uturn on Highways in the middle of very heavy traffic traveling at 100+ km an hour. The complete lack of enforcement of tragic laws other than the road block method.
From being appalled I now drive with the knowledge that at sometime instead of witnessing them some bollocks will make me a statistic.

Songkran festival road accidents claim 442 lives, up 30% from last year
                  18th April 2016

THE number of road accident fatalities during the Songkran festive season in Thailand this year has risen by 30 percent compared to 2015, only six days into the week-long celebration.

Local media reported 442 deaths between April 11 and 17, with another 3,656 injured.

Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paochinda said 3,447 road accidents were reported during that period.

The death toll, he said, was higher this year, with an additional 78 fatalities and 97 injuries compared to last year.

On Monday alone, 45 people were killed with another 385 injured amid 242 road accidents.

According to Thai PBS, Chiang Mai saw the highest number of accidents at 168 with 175 injuries while Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima had the highest fatality rate with 19 killed in each city.

Authorities found that drunk driving was the main cause of the accidents followed by speeding.

Most accidents also involved motorcycles and pickup trucks.

The government launched its road safety campaign in conjunction with the festive season. Provincial and local administrators had earlier been instructed to strengthen measures introduced by the National Council for Peace and Order aimed at clamping down on reckless driving, speeding, and drunk driving.

Thailand: Songkran season road fatalities highest in a decade
According to Khaosod English, the highest amount killed on the road during the holiday was in 2006, when 485 people were killed.

This year, the prime cause of accidents was drunk driving, followed by speeding, while eight out of 10 injuries were sustained in accidents involving motorcycles.

The latest figure poses a headache to the government, which launched its road safety campaign in conjunction with the festive season.

The effort involved provincial and local administrators who were instructed to strengthen measures introduced by the National Council for Peace and Order aimed at clamping down on reckless driving, speeding, and drunk driving.
