  • Getting my Thai wife a tourist visa

I am American - Does my Thai wife get any tourist visa guarantees since she is married to me? Is there preferential treatment?

  • #2
Being married helps, but it not a guarantee. They will look at a lot of things. Criminal history, how long you two have been married, a reason for her to return to Thailand ie job, business, family, etc.

The interviewer can refuse a visa for any reason, even having a bad day!

        Juggalo,
I just went through this process about 8 months ago. From the US Visa to the Greencard. There are many factors for acceptance and denial. You will not get any preferential treatment being married.

How long do you plan on staying? 30, 60, 90 days? BTW most did not know that you can apply for up to 6 months.

You can apply online at http://thai.bangkok.usembassy.gov/visas.html (Thai Version)

A couple of quick notes. The cost is about 4800 baht + 300 baht for the PIN to access your application status. However if you are denied you lose that money. It is quite a few pages and a lot of information. Sadly again being married does not make it any easier. In fact in my experience, you may come under more scrutiny for a host of reasons. As the other poster commented you may just get rejected because he/she is having a bad day or they have some suspicions. It is a bit subjective. I have witnessed quite a few folks that got rejected even if they have a child.

During the interview process be prepared. They want to know she has assets to return to whether you are married or not.

        Hope this info helps

            Tambien Ban (yellow book)

When applying for my annual 'Retirement visa' at immigration earlier this year, I was advised by the immigration official to apply for the
'Yellow book'' as proof of my residence and where I live at my local Amphur.( It has never been a problem before in my 6 years in Thailand)
So the very next day my wife and I visited our local Amphur and inquired about my application for said yellow book.
After much head-scratching, umming and arghing and looking at their books of references and a 3 hour wait I was informed by a rather pompous official that I could not be issued with a yellow book as I was deemed a threat to national security.....
Such are the ways of Thailand....... Pathetic & Laughable in the same measure.

Doesn't the yellow book indicate ownership of the house?

I find the Thai way to be about as stupid as it gets. " Uuhhhohhh.... Giggle " Just want to slap them when they do this.

Finally, after ten years, I'm serious about getting my tambien ban (yellow book). Honestly, what a bunch of simians- nobody has a clue what to do, and just tries to fob you off, in the hope you will forget about it. This has been happening for four years, and I've put my foot down and am insisting upon it, to considerable marital discord.

" Simians" Yes my thoughts exactly whenever dealing with Thai mid level authorities, and many many others. Really missing the bit of the brain that deals with responsibility and consequence.

So what is a yellow book exactly?

Well aren't you the lucky one? Obviously a rare encounter with an even rarer polite and civil Thai Official not fraught or imbued with the classic Thai ineptitude.
