In my opinion it's fine to make noise in public places, but there should be respect for others.

      You're welcome.

The next stage is viewing the World openly, looking within, and changing your perceptions.
Mao, you should educate yourself on the various (mostly failed) efforts Thai authorities have made to reduce noise pollution over the past decade or so. Your lack of knowledge about the country you intend to spend your entire life in isn't my problem.

Where is the line drawn? Do you value the rights of someone to not use an exhaust pipe, or the rights of others to not have to hear its effects?

Good questions. I think that in the end it comes down to community norms and standards.

Changes are afoot. To wit - the no smoking on the beaches for one. Mandatory seat belts worn or a ticket...
This place doesn't do change very rapidly.
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

Dogs barking constantly in the yard next door now- at the boom boom thud of 'music' from 50 yards up the road. This music has not happened for a while but it rattles the windows in the houses nearer. I think we are the only people who ever complained and the response was I only have it this loud cos the bloke in the next street has his on loud, what about him then. The bloke opposite lives outside, only seems to go in to sleep, watches the tv with the door open with the sound right up. This is better than when he moved the stereo outside and played it every night. mrs had a word with him and the stereo went back in, but he never spoke to us since, I hate these fukers.

It annoys the locals too but they bite their lip. Old habits die hard, but things will improve.

They're probably scared of being shot if they complain

Kreng Jai is nonsense of course, it only comes into action if there is some face to be gained in showing how considerate you are, driving, making a racket, pushing in a line and disturbing others in all sorts of ways seem to be off limits where it's concerned. These shits only seem to be kreng jai with the people they consider their social superiors, it's that backward ass licking up the spectrum again.

Yep it's a fear thing. Many Thais are scared of people who are richer or more influential than them, because they know they'll be made to regret it if they make a stand.

That is because no one perceives it as a problem.

                        Talking to each other loudly.
                        After-market car exhausts.
                        Referring to you as farang.

They don't perceive them as issues, as disrespect, or anything negative.

It's your perception that they are, that gets you all hot and bothered and angry. The problem is an inner one. Look inside, to help improve your life.

                        isn't my problem.
Correct, your problem is the inability to correctly perceive situations and actions of others. Once you look inside and change this, your life will improve no end.

Good luck. I believe you can do it!

Educated Thais don't like noise any more than educated westerners do.

Too much time hanging around Nana Plaza perhaps Mao?

You're talking about uneducated Thais - security guards, shop drivers.....

To them there's nothing untoward about it at all.

See, it's your inability to perceive how the 'offenders' perceive their actions that is causing you so much angst.

                            Journey inward.

                            Open your mind and grow.

It took me way less than a few weeks to decide you are a tosser.

And it doesn't matter how long I am a member, or how long you have been, as you will always be a 'member tosser'.
