  • Best and worst Thai province you have lived in and why?

Bangkok was the worst. It was crowded, pouted, not friendly, too many tourists, too expensive and too much traffic.

I am loving teaching in Chiang Mai. Its cleaner, less polluted, more friendly easy to get a round, not too expensive and lots of Western restaurants.

Phuket is perhaps one of worst, very expensive; nasty traffic and virtually no public transport around the island. The only redeeming virtue are the many beautiful beaches, but sadly chocking on plastic waste.

At least Bangkok has fabulous public transportation systems, but also the tastiest and most affordable street food on the planet.

After that real Thai towns like; Trang, Takuapa, Ranong, Chumpon, Prachuap Kiri, Tak, Nan, Fang and many others are really great places to live or visit.

I loved Pattaya fifteen years ago and have grown to love Bangkok for the reasons given above. Terminal 21 on Sukhumwit has to be my idea of Heaven - wonderful food and stunningly beautiful women eating it.

Kanchanaburi is a lovely place and it is hard to come to terms that such awful atrocities took place there. The river road between Nong Khai and Chiang Khan will take some beating for fantastic scenery but even this is surpassed by the splendour of Loei province, particularly the the towns of Dan Sai and Phu Rua.

The city of Loei is awful but is miles better than Udon Thani which is possibly the most horrible place on the planet.

Opinions are like assholes- we've all got one. I've lived east of Pattaya, in Chonburi, and for the last 8 or 9 years in rural Ubon. I like them both, in very different ways.
I'm not a great fan of Bangkok, or Phuket- but others differ. It doesn't make them wrong, or me right. In general (IMHO), I find the people to be better in the north.

Parts of Bangkok are just as rural as Ubon.

            That's a fact.
Indeed, even within the most populous city in LOS, there's enclaves that are more 'village-like' than being in the 'big city'.

There are hundreds of kilometres of rural lanes and numerous small villages within the rice fields of the Nong Chok district of Bangkok. I always laugh when some farang says he's had enough of the urban jungle so relocates to nakorn nowhere.

Only went there for a long weekend, but I must admit I liked Singburi- which isn't far from Bk, yet a world away. Amazingly fertile part of the world.

Believe those blinkered Farang you're referring to have never left the urban jungle of Sukhumvit from Nana eastwards...

First time I visited Thailand I asked staff at the hotel in BK where did no tourists go. They said Loei. Went and loved it. No farang and a beautiful place.

^ I been through Loei couple times, thought it was ok.

I forgot to mention Phitsanulok as a quite pleasant town. Very close to some lovely country to the east, that hwy 12 is a treat for motorcycling..

I lived in Ban Saray back in the late 70's & early 80's and it was quite lovely. I was the only Farang in town.

The place is a mini Walking Street today.

                        Real progress, eh?

Not so much today. This is the town of Chiang Khan in Loei & receives 650,000 tourists annually, mostly Thai. Chiang Khan Walking Street today is a hip and trendy place for Thais to visit. The town is right next to the Mekong.

Holy Shit. I was there over Christmas new year about 8 years ago and it was deserted. I walked down that street and could not find anything that I could fit into. There was hardly a soul there all week. It was a gem of a place.
