    • The End is Near for NASA's Historic Dawn Mission to the Asteroid Belt

Appreciate those gorgeous photos of the dwarf planet Ceres that NASA's Dawn spacecraft keeps beaming home, because that tap will soon run dry. https://www.space.com/28710-ceres-dw...fographic.htmlhttps://www.space.com/12279-nasa-daw...fographic.htmlhttps://www.space.com/24368-dwarf-pl...-asteroid.htmlhttps://www.space.com/41759-nasa-daw...e=notification

Astronomers have for the first time observed clumps of gas orbiting dangerously close to the giant black hole that lies at the heart of our Milky Way galaxy.
Scientists think a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A* lurks at the center of the Milky Way. Recent observations of this area show that clumps of gas orbit at about 30 percent of the speed of light on a circular path just outside the black hole's event horizon, according to a statement from the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

Using the GRAVITY instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope, astronomers detected flares of infrared radiation coming from the accretion disc surrounding Sagittarius A*. Their findings not only confirm the presence of the supermassive black hole but also suggest that material is orbiting incredibly close to the black hole's event horizon. What's more, the recent observations offer the most detailed view yet of material orbiting so close to a black hole, according to the statement. • Christmas comes to Mars: Stunning images reveal gigantic ice filled crater 50 miles wide

It is a picture perfect Christmas card image from another planet.

The European Space Agency's Mars Express has returned an incredible new series of images showing a giant crater on the red planet.

It shows the Korolev crater, a 50 mile (82 km) wide feature in in the northern lowlands of Mars.

Just south of a large patch of dune-filled terrain that encircles part of the planet's northern polar cap (known as Olympia Undae), ESA says it is 'an especially well-preserved example of a martian crater.'

It is filled not by snow but ice, with its center hosting a mound of water ice some 1.8 kilometres thick all year round.

This domed deposit forms a glacier comprising around 528 cubic miles of non-polar ice on Mars.

Smaller amounts of water ice are distributed on and around the crater edge in the form of thin layers of frost.

This ever-icy presence is due to a phenomenon known as a 'cold trap' caused by the crater's floor lying two kilometres vertically beneath its rim.

The very deepest parts of Korolev crater, those containing ice, act as a natural cold trap: the air moving over the deposit of ice cools down and sinks, creating a layer of cold air that sits directly above the ice itself.

Acting as a shield, this layer helps the ice remain stable and stops it from heating up and disappearing."

The Curiosity rover on Mars captured 57 images of itself, which NASA personnel stitched together into this "selfie."
                              Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS

We all edit our selfies to capture our best side, and the Curiosity rover on Mars is no different, as shown in a new "selfie" NASA released to mark the rover's last days at Vera Rubin Ridge.

Curiosity's favorite selfie trick isn't a matter of choosing the most flattering filter; instead, the robotic explorer favors stitching together shots to build a composite image, creating the illusion that a companion took the picture. The rover has used this approach for "selfies" before to stunning effect.

In the case of this new image, captured Jan. 15, the final product is built from 57 different individual photographs snapped by the rover using its Mars Hand Lens Imager. That instrument is located on the end of Curiosity's arm. [The Top 10 Space Robot 'Selfies' of All Time!]

While the result leaves the rover looking glamorous, the scenery is nothing to scoff at either. Curiosity's 19th drill hole, at a site nicknamed "Rock Hall," is visible to the bottom left of the rover, in the largeish rock. The picture also offers a dusty look at the neighborhood, which is weathering a dust storm right now.

Curiosity captured this image as it prepared to wrap up more than a year of scientific investigation at Vera Rubin Ridge, named for the famous astronomer who discovered dark matter. Now, the rover's headed a bit farther south on Mars, toward a location that is heavy in clays (so far, it's just being called "Clay-Bearing Unit"). As Curiosity travels, it's doing a little science along the way, which should help geologists understand how the different rock types found at the ridge and the clay-bearing unit meet."

Lots of space debris is orbiting Earth, including non-functional satellites.

A bizarre object orbiting Earth is reminding astronomers of an empty trash bag.

The unusual satellite is trekking around the planet in an almost absurd ellipse, dipping as close as 372.8 miles (600 kilometers) from the surface and then swinging out to a distance of 334,460 miles (538,261 km), or 1.4 times the average distance of the Earth to the moon.

According to Northolt Branch Observatories in London, the object is a light piece of material left over from a rocket launch. What it will do next is anyone's guess. [How Much Space Junk Hits Earth?]

                                Unusual orbiting object
According to the observatories, the Haleakala (ATLAS-HKO) Observatory in Hawaii was the first to detect the object. The observatory is tasked with detecting near-Earth objects to warn of dangerous chunks that might impact the planet. This particular object is not dangerous, but it is weird."
