  • Watch the Moon Swing by Jupiter Tonight!https://www.space.com/40980-moon-pas...e=notification

Believe I read somewhere recently that Jupiter's famous Red Spot was shrinking.
God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

        • touchdown operations are planned in February 2019 and in April or May 2019. Additionally, Hayabusa2 will generate a crater with an impactor in March or April 2019, and do a second rover deployment in July. (Eventually, the mothership will deploy a total of three rovers and a lander onto Ryugu's surface.)

Hayabusa2 will also spiral down to collect samples from the fresh crater. If all goes according to plan, these samples will come down to Earth in a special return capsule near the end of 2020.
          Absolutely amazing.

            • A Gorgeous 'Blue' Sand Dune Snakes Across Mars in This Awesome NASA Photo

A big Martian sand dune looks blue in this enhanced-color photo, which was taken on Jan. 24, 2018, by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The dune is actually gray but stands out because it differs from its surroundings in composition and/or grain size.

A big sand dune blazes in an electric blue on the Red Planet in a gorgeous photo by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).

The large, complex dune is embedded within a field of classic, crescent-shaped dunes on the floor of the 147-mile-wide (236 kilometers) Lyot Crater, which lies about 50 degrees north of the Martian equator.

"This particular dune, appearing like turquoise blue in enhanced color, is made of finer material and/or has a different composition than the surrounding" sand, NASA officials wrote recently in a description of the photo, which MRO snapped using its HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera on Jan. 24. [See more amazing Mars photos by NASA's MRO]

Before you get too excited about the exotic geological possibilities on alien worlds: As that reference to "enhanced color" suggests, the dune isn't actually blue.

HiRISE photos "are given min-max stretches in each individual color image to increase contrast," HiRISE principal investigator Alfred McEwen, a planetary geologist at the University of Arizona, told the website Inverse. "The dunes are actually gray, but appear relatively blue after such a stretch, because most of Mars is red."

The $720 million MRO mission arrived in orbit around the Red Planet in March 2006. Since then, the spacecraft has performed a variety of work, from hunting for signs of past water activity to scouting out landing sites for future rover missions. The orbiter also relays data from NASA Mars surface craft, such as the rovers Opportunity and Curiosity, back to Earth.

HiRISE is an incredibly sharp-eyed instrument. The camera can resolve features as small as a coffee table on the Martian surface from MRO's near-polar orbit, whose altitude has ranged over the years from 155 miles to 196 miles (250 to 316 km). "

              • Saturn Moon Enceladus Is First Alien 'Water World' with Complex Organics

The Cassini spacecraft first flew through the plumes of Saturn's moon Enceladus in November 2009, capturing this image along the way. Now, new data suggests that those plumes might contain complex organic (carbon-based) molecules.

Complex organic molecules have been discovered for the first time coming from the depths of Saturn's moon Enceladus, a new study reported.

Spacecraft scheduled to launch soon could explore what this new discovery says about the chances of life within icy moons like Enceladus, the study's researchers said.

The sixth largest of Saturn's moons, Enceladus is only about 314 miles (505 kilometers) in diameter. This makes the moon small enough to fit inside the borders of Arizona. [Photos of Saturn's Icy Moon Enceladus]

In 2005, NASA's Cassini spacecraft detected plumes of water vapor and icy particles erupting from Enceladus, revealing the existence of a giant ocean hidden under the moon's frozen shell. Because there is life virtually wherever there is water on Earth, these findings suggested that life might also exist on Enceladus.

Previously, scientists had detected only simple organic (carbon-based) compounds, each less than about five carbon atoms in size, in the plumes of Enceladus. Now, researchers have detected complex organic molecules from the moon, including some at least 15 carbon atoms in size.

"This is the first-ever detection of complex organics coming from an extraterrestrial water world," study lead author Frank Postberg, a planetary scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, told Space.com.

The scientists analyzed data that Cassini gathered when it flew within a plume from Enceladus, as well as from when the probe passed through Saturn's E ring, which is made up of ice grains spewed from Enceladus. The investigators detected ice grains loaded with complex organic material in both the plume and the E ring.

The researchers conjectured that these organic materials were cooked up inside the hot, rocky and fragmented core of Enceladus, which prior work suggested had water seeping through its pores.

The organics are then injected, together with the hot water, into the overlying cooler ocean by hydrothermal vents," Postberg said. "Then, they can be transported upwards to the ocean surface on the walls of rising bubbles of gas."

Postberg noted that most of the organic-loaded ice grains the researchers saw were in Saturn's E ring. This might suggest that these complex organic molecules were not produced within Enceladus, but instead resulted from sunlight-triggered chemical reactions in space.

"However, we observe the highest proportion of these complex organics in the young, inner E ring close to Enceladus, as compared to the old, outer E ring far away from Enceladus," Postberg said. "Furthermore, we also see the complex organics directly in the plume."

The researchers cautioned that these new findings are not solid evidence for life, as biological reactions are not the only potential sources of complex organic molecules. The next logical step is to go back to Enceladus soon "and see if there is extraterrestrial life," Postberg said. "Nowhere else can a potentially habitable extraterrestrial ocean habitat be so easily probed by a space mission as in the case of Enceladus."

Postberg added that the European Space Agency already has missions, Europa Clipper and JUICE, scheduled to launch in 2022 that will visit Europa and Ganymede, the icy moons of Jupiter that have subsurface oceans. These missions will check for habitability on those worlds."

Skywatchers who woke up early to see a SpaceX rocket launch from Florida today (June 29) were treated to quite a spectacle as the Falcon 9 rocket blazed into the predawn sky, and the photos they captured are jaw-dropping.

Topped with a used Dragon cargo spacecraft, the Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 5:42 a.m. EDT (0942 GMT) on a mission to deliver 5,900 lbs. (2,700 kilograms) of supplies and science gear to the International Space Station (ISS).

"We had a beautiful morning," Kirk Shireman, program manager for the ISS, said during a postlaunch news conference. "I was going to say 'breathtaking,' but maybe 'awakening' might be a better word." [In Photos: SpaceX's Dazzling Dragon Launch to Space Station]

As the Falcon 9 hauled the Dragon into low Earth orbit, the rocket's flames created an enormous, glowing halo in the morning twilight. "These pre-sunrise or post-sunset launches give for a spectacular show in the sky," Jessica Jensen, director of Dragon mission management for SpaceX, said at the news conference.

"Basically, what's happening is, it's still dark outside, but you have the sun illuminating the plume as it's in space," Jensen said. "I like to refer to it as the space jellyfish that's coming down after us."

Retired NASA astronaut Nicole Stott captured this photo of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket as it launched a used Dragon cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station on June 29, 2018.
