My advice would be to learn to read, even if you don't learn much of the language.
It's great reading menus, roadsigns. etc etc.
The best is when you catch them out when they say 50 baht, and in front of you on the menu it say 10 baht. Happened in Pattaya in the private showers off the beach. In Thai 10b, in English 50b. Told her in Thai that I don't want the English Shower, I want the Thai ab-naam, sip baht.
Thought she was gonna shoot me she got so angry lol.
This is a great book for beginning.
and practice with every menu, shop sign, road sign, bus, van, that you see. It's a great feeling when you first start picking up the letters and first read to where a bus is going to, to the name of the shop, or Khao Pat Gai.

I learned to speak and read Russian within a year. Fook knows why I can't be arsed with Thai?
Russian is easy, Thai is too hard cos of the daft tones. My mrs is a teacher of Thai, and I still can't speak it after 23 years.
