This issue is real and is the single greatest threat to the economy and therefore the lives of most people in Thailand. But just like the road traffic disaster, I reckon the solution is the same. And IMO the same solution would solve most (if not all) of Thailand's problems.
The creation (not rebuilding) of a corruption free Police and Judiciary. The current 'methods' and people in those roles cannot be fixed - they need to be replaced.
Whilst 100% free of corruption is impossible - the current 99% corrupt is the core reason for most of the problems in Thailand. Everyone knows it, and the Thais accept it. But it needs to be addressed or Thailand will only get worse.
Any attempt to fix any problem always comes up against this roadblock - the corrupt vested interests either stop it or adjust any change. You cannot get rid of rich/corrupted people - the only way to stop them is to take away what 'protects' them - the corrupted Police and Judiciary system.

This , of course, is nonsense. The vehicle export industry adds more to the GDP than tourism. The government likes to talk up the tourist arrivals numbers as if that means the economy is doing well. But...

You speak utter rubbish, but pray tell exactly how 'vehicle exports' directly affects the lives of the majority of Thai people. By that I mean directly affects the lives of millions of farmers and poorer people living in villages and regional locations - who are the vast majority of the population.
GDP is irrelevant to the lives of ordinary Thai people - you dont know that do you? This is the 3rd world my western educated twit - what works in USA/UK/EU does not work that way here - economics 101 is not here. One tourist spending a few dollars in a local shop (either in BKK or anywhere else) does more for the ordinary Thai people, than the money from a car/truck sale overseas going into the coffers of the Thai wealthy families.
