I'm still wondering whether it's purely down to low intelligence levels across the nation, or whether they are too lazy, clumsy, and reckless to be good drivers, or whether they're actually rather nasty people when they're in their little blacked out boxes on wheels thus don't need to put on their usual charm & pretense.

If they don't know you, and on the roads they do not, they are totally selfish with zero manners or patience and are concerned for nobody but themselves, the only rule is me first. Their stupidity is unbelievable at times, dogs have got more sense than a lot of them. Of course the joke driving test where you can get a license without ever actually driven on a road does not help. They are number one for road deaths because they deserve it, it's like an airliner crashing every week year round, and they are too stupid and lazy to ever do anything serious about it.

You have to stop at a white line (some fail that) reverse through a line of cones then reverse into a space and out, that's it as far as the 'driving' goes. If fail one or two you have a few weeks to go back and do the ones you failed on. If you still can't do that then it's under the table. Pathetic really.

The written and driving test is about the same as in the US. The core of the problem is lack of traffic law enforcement. It's hit and miss with a quick payoff to the cops. Start strict enforcement with significant fines and attitudes and driving habits will change over time. Until then, Thailand will continue to top the world road carnage stats.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

Thai drivers essentially fall asleep at stop lights, put the stupid parking brake on and doze off. When the reality of a green light disturbs their consciousness, they must then take the parking brake off and then they mash the accelerator to the floor and drive like a bat outa hell. Basically, these people are horrible drivers but I've seen worse.God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.

Most of you are assuming that the Thais have licences. I wonder what the percentage is of unlicenced drivers (especially of motorcycles).
Also, the ones that do have a licence probably never had any lessons. As has been mentioned, just pay a bit extra to get a pass in the licence test.
BTW. I was wondering why every time that I spelt 'licence' Mr Spell Check would underline the word. Discovered that you yanks have changed the spelling of yet another perfectly good English word.

Remember: ln thailand having a car elevates ones status. They need people to notice them. After all, saddled with debt for the next 20yrs is a small price to pay for being superior to low class pedestrians.
Walk around a few car parks at crappy 4-5000 baht a month 'condo' blocks, you'll see fleets of brand new cars parked up by debt laden Thais. Even the odd Mercedes.
Must be a miserable existence, raising ones class status. Sad really.

When I worked here a decade ago I used to commute by BTS from Sukhumvit to Sathorn and would see a Thai colleague in the train some days. After a couple of months of not seeing him I asked him why in the office. He said he'd bought a Nissan Teana (which was costing him 1/3 of his salary in payments) so drove to work, taking an hour or more instead of 25 minutes by BTS. I don't think he went anywhere else in it. And this guy was educated at Chula.
Presumably he wanted apartment carpark & office carpark prestige.

If they ever get the train line working out to Bang Yai it'll be great! As the authorities have built a huge park & ride facility right at the terminus of this new line.
Man, I tell you, this poster will be parking & riding into town and be a much happier camper!God, the panic within the Dems, MSM, and left must be horrifying...realizing that Joe is really the best they've got.
