Thailand just got the most tourists ever as boom continues

BANGKOK (BLOOMBERG) - Thailand received a record number of foreign tourists for a single month as a boom in arrivals continues.
Arrivals jumped almost 16 per cent in December from a year earlier to an unprecedented 3.5 million, the Tourism Ministry's Permanent Secretary Pongpanu Svetarundra said in a briefing in Bangkok on Tuesday (Jan 16). He predicted a fresh high in January amid the traditional peak season for tourism.

"We will continue to keep breaking records," Pongpanu said.

Pongpanu said the government is targeting 37 million visitors in 2018 and 3 trillion baht (S$124.2 billion) of revenue from domestic and foreign tourists combined. That would be worth more than a fifth of the economy - and put ever greater strain on congested airports as well as Bangkok's packed roads and metro system.

Tourism and exports have contributed to an acceleration in economic growth in the military-run country, as well as an appreciation in its currency.

The baht has strengthened more than 2 per cent against the US dollar this year, one of the strongest performers in Asia, prompting concern that the climb will eventually harm competitiveness in Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.

Because todays quality tourists can't afford to fly with them

The good old days of wedged up farang sex tourists flying in on Thai Airways, drunk on free booze and propositioning the stewards are long gone.
          They should be kicking themselves.

I flew in on Oman Air via Muscat. On the Muscat-Bkk flight I thought I was on a plane heading to Islamabad. Everyone was scruffily dressed and Indian looking

Indeed , what's with singlets and flip flops as dress for air travel ?

I remember back when , the pilot actually inspecting the passengers ( Merparti Dwn > Denpasar ) and telling some that unless they lifted their game they wouldn't be getting on the plane .

Singlets in restaurants is another offense that is deserving of a whipping .

This "dressing down" thing has been going on for a while now and it seems like it's getting worse!
It's like people are doing their best to cloth themselves like some bums who just crawled out from under a freeway overpass.

Guess it must be good business for some all the chineses group tours. Apparently even the 2 boats sinking and 50 dead has not put a dent on the demand for tours. Even as they where bringing bodies ashore.

It's nothing to do with Thailand becoming more desirable. It's all down to the Chinese getting richer and travelling more.

Next they'll be claiming that western powers were desperate to colonise them but were unable to

Yip but if this trade war breaks out maybe the chinese will have less money to spend on top class destinations in Thailand

Hopefully it will. Most of the world puts tariffs on US goods, including the EU. They're entitled to finally retaliate.

Likewise with Thailand and the UK. They send their manky chicken and shitty Suzuki cars to the UK but slap huge import taxes on MINIs and the Waitrose goods imported by Tops.

And Iceland products at Villa, and Carrefour brands at Tops, both of which are pretty shite

Imagine Somchai with his Fishermans pie or boil in the bag cod in parsley sauce
