  • Diving in Thailand

The good, the bad and the 'Don't go there'.

I have a friend who has a diving business here but he mainly focuses on the Phillipines not Thailand, so having exhausted his trips there and October break is coming up we're thinking of a diving trip to Thailand. Somewhere devoid of scammers and unprofessionals preferably. Ko Tao is rather nice, anyone have good diving experiences please share and advise.

I've been diving in Thailand since the late 80s.

October is problematic because it is just the beginning of the Andaman Sea dive season, so conditions may or may not be great. And, depending on when you dive, some places may not yet be open.

IMHO the best diving in Thailand is in the Southern Gulf. I like Hin Daeng, Hin Muang, Koh Ha and Koh Khao.

In the Gulf I prefer Losin. In fact, I'm doing a four day liveaboard there beginning this evening.

I've never had good diving in and around Koh Tao, but maybe that's just my bad luck.

I don't do day trip boats anymore. Just liveaboards three or four times a year.

Lately we've been using the Tapana Catamaran. Nice boat. Decent prices. But, it's all Thai customers and Thai-style organization which may or may not suit.

^^Cool vid, Buadhai and brings back memories! Enjoy your diving!

I got my PADI license on Koh Tao ten years ago now. I went with DJL Diving and they were quite good. I learned all the basics in the pool and then we did about four dives in total all around Koh Tao. I'll see if I can find those pics as it seems like so long ago now. The area is beautiful, but we didn't see that many fish really. I remember getting sea sick as it was really wavy on my last dive. I decided not to do the dive and had to go back the next day before I could pass the final dive. Here is the website for the place. Nice to see them still around after ten years.

Went to Losin again over the weekend. Three days of diving. Eleven dives. Confirmed my recollection that this is one of the nicest dive sites in Thailand. The reef is incredibly healthy with a huge range of corals: many varieties and many colors. (There was one pinkish table coral that was especially stunning.) Lots of fish, as well, but nowhere near the number you see in sites that are closer to land. But, we did see some huge Bumphead Parrotfish, Marbled Grouper, etc.

Oh. And, yeah, we saw a Whale Shark and a couple of Eagle Rays.

Wow, lucky you! I saw a manta ray in Australia when I went diving in the great barrier reef. I also saw lots of sea turtles. I went to this place..

Michaelmas Cay not too far from Cairns. By the way, I wish I had an underwater camera!!!!

I don't use one anymore. It seems that everyone on the boat has one now and most of them are willing to spend a lot more than I am on their gear. (All I had was a GoPro.)

I'm now perfectly content to just look at stuff while everyone else struggles with their giant cameras and strobes trying to get just the right shot. (Or, just the right selfie.)

Haha, well at least you had a gopro!
I definitely want to get one of those cameras where you can use underwater, but are also small and not overly clunky!
I don't dive much after I had my ears bleed one time when I came back from a dive off Koh Chang or Koh Samui (I dont even remember.. lol). I don't know what happened, but my ears have too much scarring from ear infections when young.

                      Deep. No more silly questions

The photo above (caribbean reef sharks) was taken in the Bahamas with one of the GoPros in about 10 meters of water.
